the exhuast for the fan on these laptops is on the side, but the place where the laptop sucks up air in on the bottom. and when i set my laptop down (on my lap) that fan area gets covered - isn't this bad for air circulation and what not?

yes. covering the bottom air intake will cause temperatures to rise fast in any notebook. if possible try to keep it uncovered (to allow cool air in) ...

indeed: covering up fans is always bad
you could try by placing a hard tray/book/... on your lap, and put the laptop on top of that. that should keep your legs AND the laptop cool(er)
