This was my first laptop purchase so I wasn't sure if I'd like the Vostro 1400 or 1500 better. The specs of both units I ordered are identical except for the size (obviously). After comparing the two, I prefer the 1400 due to it's slightly smaller size and lighter weight. The only problem I have with the Vostro 1400 was it was DOA. When I turned it on for the first time, it took me through the normal set up stage. As soon as it got to the screen where it says it's loading the desktop, the laptop made a nasty buzzing noise and then locked up on me. I turned it off and tried turning it back on but it would not start up. I already contacted Dell and they are in the process of shipping me out a new one.

    Anyways, onto some pics...

Nice pictures! There's quite a shocking difference in size between the two. The all black looks quite pro.

Looks like the 1400 isn't much smaller than the 1500. what is that about 1/4" around the case? Nice pics btw, its nice to see both models beside each other... now go get a 1700 so we can see all three lol

Love the size of the 1400. Too bad that didn't try to stick the 8600M into it.. would have been my first choice.

I got the WXGA+ screens on both. The 1500 seems to work fine but I think I'm just gonna sell it or return it. I'll hold onto it until my 1400 replacement gets delivered.

I'm kinda bummed that I got the Insprion 1420 instead of the Vostro 1400 simply for the all black color scheme. I haven't recieved my laptop yet (should get it today) but I just hope I like the silver keyboard, I will be using my laptop in low light areas (while DJing) so maybe the silver will give me better visability in the darkness. I still like my laptop the same as my men, black, 14.1" and a buttload of RAM.

Ya, that looks like a nice PC but it's still pretty fat.. nearly as thick as the 1400/1420. Plus the price will probably be in the $1500 range.

If someone made a 14" laptop with an 8600M-GT with the same thickness as a macbook pro (1") they'd sell a million of 'em.

Actually right after I posted that comment, ASUS released a PR with the specs for the F8SV-A1. 8600 GS :( Sigh..

Well I originally ordered the 1500 b/c that's what i thought i wanted. But after reading about how 1lb makes a big difference in laptops, i kinda started looking into the 1400. i ordered the 1400 b/c that's the one i wanted but to be 100% sure, i just kept my 1500 order. i'm either gonna try to sell the 1500 or just return it.

How's the price difference between the Vostro and a similarly equipped Inspiron for a Vostro 1400 and an Inspiron 1420, assuming after discounts?

Yeah, I know. My shipping date is ridiculous, but not unexpected considering the amount of complaints by other users here. I was thinking about going with the 1400 because of the nice black color, but went with the 1420 because of the price after free upgrades.

Oh well. I guess I'll just have to wait until September for mine.

I ordered mine 7/31/2007 and the Est. ship date is 08/14/2007. I still think it's a long time. I'll probably call them to complain later on, maybe I'll get a freebie. :D

Don't count on it. Almost every notebook model in every line now has huge wait times, likely due to hardware shortages and putting more production resources into the new lines. The latitudes have gone from 4-7 ship to up to 30 days or more recently. They'd be giving out tens of thousands of freebies.

Zepto does... Well sorta, it's 1-1.3". Too bad we can't get it in the USA.

Thanks for the pictures. Hope your replacement works out just fine.
