I recently finally found a solution to the random skipping/crackle/popping audio issue. This is an issue many of us have struggled with, some people don't notice it but almost all of us experience it whether on the vostro or the inspiron 1420 etc. I have tried removing my bluetooth adapter, removing my wifi adapter, changing video drivers, updating every driver, installing windows XP, disabling random adapters and hardware etc, and NOTHING worked until this.

Dell recently released a BIOS update for the 1400. My bios had been A00, this update brings it to A03. I have been going about a week now, and have experienced a complete lack of crackle and pop. I encourage all of you to try the BIOS update.

This of course confirms what I always thought: it's not a random flaw, it's now a software issue, and dell has been the only one capable of fixing it all along. But at least the solution seems to exist.

    NOTICE:
This is not in regards to the "crackle/pop" 20 seconds before the end of songs issue. That is a separate issue, and as far as I know it has been solved. I believe it has something to do with turning off sound enhancements in the sound driver or something.

    Merry Christmas!

I just checked and there seem to be BIOS updates for pretty much all of us. If you are experiencing this issue it is definitely worth a shot.

Hmm..what is this crackle noise? When I use my earphones I don't hear anything. But when I hook up certain speakers I hear this static noise. I was one of the first people to get the vostro 1400 right when it came out.

it is caused by a little bit of system lag in something called a deferred procedure call. its a little delay in the music stream and it comes out as a crackle or snap

Does this new bios stop the CPU whine?

Will the bios update fix that problem? I don't want to have any worse problems seeing as only external speakers have that problem but not earphones.
