Which has a better build quality, 1400/1420 or 1500/1520? (not taking in to account my personal needs here, just which is of better design)

None of them has better build quality. If build quality is important, you better look elsewhere!

Guess I should be more clear. Which has a better design? (like the having the media buttons on the front vs having them on top or having the mic plug on the front vs. the side) Which is more sturdy?

Build quality is the overall construction of the notebook. It addresses issues like: Is the chassis good enough to protect the sytem in day to day use? Can it withstand the vagaries of nature? and so on.

In Dell's lineup of notebooks, Precision, Latitude and XPS stands out for build quality. The build quality of the rest are flimsy!

Thanks, sintoic. And if I could, I would buy a Thinkpad, but that's a bit out of my budget. Although I do watch there outlet, in hope that I might find something. But I'll probably have to settle for a Vostro.

Edit: Yes, I know the lineup. I have a old Latitude C600 and still running.

Yes, the inspiron 1420 that I have is absolutely rock solid. You could puch the chassis and all you would hurt is your knuckle :p. It even survived a 4 foot drop!

    guys, take it easy

i personally care what is inside of the machine and not what is on outside, and I had a chance to see touch and smell all Inspirons line up close. They build great, and good enough to buy them

As far as internals go, many claim the 14" is designed better in terms of layout then the 1520. I wouldn't know because I haven't ripped a 1420 open yet, but I rip my 1520 open monthly to give it the 9 yard cleaning, I noticed no real stupid flaws to be honest.

Both are designed great, then again I wouldn't know what would make a system badly designed - unless it had a obvious problems, then I think anyone would be able to come to a conclusion of what is flawed and what isn't.

If it hurts his knuckles numb nuts, I don't think it'd be a 'light punch'.

Take you're Dell hating ass over to the Apple forums, they got a shiny new buggy OS you can poke at.

If design, media buttons and mic locations would helped machine's performance I would care about it.

Inspirons look good enough to be used as bulletproof shields, that's why I am buying one

You are taking things too seriously!

I have used all brands of notebooks but prefer Dell XPS line-up!

I have no idea how you have assumed things!

CrashOverride, I agree, their e-mail department is the pits.

I don't really care a lot about the placement of stuff. Just want to know how well it will hold up. I've used mostly Latitudes in the past and there great! Just wondering how the Vostro are. From what I've there great.

i just guess they'll frobably be the same..
you made a poll, i also guess the 1500/1520 option will have more votes because there are many more users of this models than of the 1400/1420

I have observed that people generally tend to vote for what they have rather than what they like or should vote for!

comparing the two's durability, i can not compare as i do not own a 1400. However, on construction and layout, i like the rear usb ports of the 1500 and the rear power vs the side placements of the 1400. I like the front media buttons rather than the top of the 1400, and i like the side headphone jack rather than the front on the 1400. I also like the latch that holds my lid down on my 1500 which the 1400 doesn't have. Thus said, i think the 1400 should do those also. So my vote is for the 1500/1520.
