I'm wondering how much I'd regret not getting the LED back-lit screen and going with the standard LCD on the new M1330 ($150 puts it out of my range)

How much battery life lost by going with an LCD? Is it Glossy or Matte?

Besides battery life/screen brightness is there anything else I'll be losing out on?

    Thanks :D

They're all glossy on the 1330 and from what I've been seeing the battery savings for LED screens is minimal to negligible.

We will not know the power savings until we start getting our systems. Other than battery life the LED screens are meant to produce slightly better contrast, brightness, and color accuracy.

Maybe you could run down to a store that stocks Macbook Pro's. Then compare the new Macbook Pro's with other laptops on display? Then you can decided if you need one or not.

Checkout the Macbook Screens for reference.

This does not mean the XPS M1330 will look as different as these are, but it's a good example of what to expect.

on the dell site, it said this about the screen and dimensions
"All XPS M1330 LCD Hi-Definition panels are 13.3 inch WideSscreen (1280x800) Displays with TrueLife. The LED display starts at 3.97lbs and is 0.87 inches thick compared to the standard display which starts at 4.28lbs. and is 0.97 inches thick."

These numbers are with a 4-cell battery, so getting a 6-cell w/ LCD brings weight to 4.5 lbs and 9-cell brings it to 4.9 lbs, based on their battery comparisons

You will regret it so much, that you'll be willing to wait an additional 2 months for the LED screen after returning your m1330 w/ LCD screen.

I do not like to freak people out like that, but yeah personally I would regret it a lot if I had not ordered the LED. But some people value things differently. The screen will still look good just not as good. :p It's up to you if you think it's worth $150.

Ok, so we can assume battery life change isn't anything monumental?

And other than that the frame or shape isn't really changed as you say its not much thicker.

And lastly the brightness/color may be better?

If thats the case I don't think I'll mind a bit not having it. I really have no issues at all with my current glossy laptop screen. My only real concern was losing crazy amounts of battery life.

Thanks for the extremely helpful info guys! :)

EDIT: On a side note, does that mean my 1330 would be delievered much quicker than the LED LCDs? I thought I read that was the reason they were so backed up.

We honestly don't know. All we have to base our data is other LED LCD technology (like the one in the macbook pro?)....

so its all subjective until we all get our hands on one!

Yep what blah said. We are basing all this on the Macbook Pro basically. The M1330 may get super battery life, it may not. It all depends on how well Dell implements the LED, what display they are using, etc.

As far as we know no M1330 have shipped at all yet. So we can not even say if it is the LED screen holding up the process. Some people have said processors, LED screens, video cameras, lots of things.

Basically in the thousands of posts about the M1330 we still have very little concrete information. :)

What's with the yellow tinge on the MacBook Pro on the right? The grey windows/taskbars dont seem nearly as grey, nor does the white seem white.

yeah supposedly the weight of the normal LCD with a 6 cell battery is 4.5 pounds which is definitely not a huge difference from the LED...the 80 nit difference is kinda disheartening for me since i choose not to get the LED due to a budget....been kicking myself ever since i ordered....tried to call in and downgrade graphics card and upgrade the screen but as others said, it would push my late shipping date of mid august to even later....this laptop better be worth it!!!

Again that was an un-scientific test. It could have been any number of things like mis-calibration. But if you read the guys comments he says that in person it looks very vivid with better white levels. And most reviews I have seen have commented on how good the new screen looks.

Also if you notice they are running slightly different versions of OSX, and have different video cards.

The M1330 is very much like the SZ, Premium M1330 (3.97lbs, LED) Non Premium (4.3lbs, LCD).

Interesting quote from one of the Engadget articles...

Apple claims users can see a battery-life benefit of between 30 mins - 1 hour (depending on use). They did not have stats on exact efficiencies between LED and CCFL backlit displays.

I'm not sure we should make too many decisions based on the Macbook Pro data. Yeah it uses similar technology, but its a Mac.. the MBP has had better screens for a while... I remember a reviewer saying he didn't expect users to notice a difference between the LED and LCD screens on the M1330.

I personally would not get anything less than the LED.

the reviwers here at notebook review have indicated that the LED screen is highly recommended and they love it in the review thread.
