My dell inspiron 1318 won't turn on at all. I ordered a new power cord from dell which did nothing. The tech support at dell tells me my mother board needs to be replaced (at a cost of 500$, which is more then the computer is worth).

It stopped charging one day, then went dead. I figured it was the power cord. Now it won't even turn on. Seems odd to me that the mother board would break down when it ran fine up until the battery died. I ruled out the battery as well by taking it out and trying to run it with just the power cord and no battery. anyone ever heard of this or have any suggestions.

    I would

    - Remove the battery and AC adapter, hold down the power button for 30 seconds 2-3 times.

After that, you have power circuitry issues or a genuinely defective motherboard. I wouldn't pay Dell 500 to fix that laptop.

If you can find a motherboard for less than $100, it might be worth your while to fix it. In general though, the laptop is worth no more than $300 (depending on your spec), so if you're paying more than that, you're definitely better off getting a new laptop.
