So, right now i'm waiting for my laptop to ship which is taking forever.

At Best Buy, they have pretty much the same specs I ordered but in 1280x800 resolution. So I could have my laptop right now, but i'd be without higher resolution.

Does it make a big difference? Is it worth waiting for?

(Also, the one I ordered had 7200RPM instead of 5400 at BB)

I'd strongly recommend the 1440x900 over the 1280x800. 1440x900 gives you a considerable more amount of screen real estate. What model Dell is it that you are referring too?

    +1 on 1440x900..

though the hard drive upgrade.... not really a necessity

The 1440x900 is surprisingly MUCH larger than a 1280x800 resolution, you'll notice a huge difference in my opinion.

Did you get the LED screen?

    Inspiron 1525

I also ordered it in that weird Sea Sky lid. That could be hit or miss really.

All it said was High Resolution glossy widescreen. There was no option for "LED".

I have a 700GB external so i'm just concerned with speed. But i've been told a 320GB 5400 RPM is around the same speed as a 120GB 7200RPM which I don't understand. Is it because the data is closer together?

If you dont have LED as an option, the 1440 is always much preferred over the 1280 for me.

Definitely the 1440! I like it, but I would go higher if I could.

I saw the 1280 resolution at BB and it looked alright.

I got a HP instead for the same price. Lower resolution, but 1GB more RAM and 64bit vista and a webcam.

1280 will give you faster gaming performance at native resolution. Easier for the eyes too since you would have less pixels cramped in a 15.4" screen.

I currently have 1280x800 on my laptop and it isn't really enough room for me. The next laptop I get will have at least have a 1440x900 screen.

1280x800. PPIs over 100 make everything hard to see.

I wonder how much of a difference 1680x1050 is compared to 1440x900... I noticed Dell recently removed the 1680 option for the 1525 in their configurator.

I've seen both. It's a pretty big difference. I wouldn't really want that on less than a 15" screen however . . . would be more fun on the 17 probably, for my eyes anyway.
