I ordered an M1530 a couple days ago, and since I used the student discount I could only get the basic 1280x800 screen. I am not really sure if I am going to like this or not, I have heard good and bad things. Right now I am on a 17" 1280x1024 screen and it is just fine for me...will the 15" 1280x800 be similar to this? I am guessing they should be fairly close, if not almost exact.

It will be very close, you are right. If you want to look at what it will look like, head to your local store that sells laptops. That resolution is the standard one that most all 15.4" laptops in the store will have. You can play around with one and see how it feels.

The taskbar will be a bit thicker (800 vertical pixels on a 15.4" vs. 1024 on your 17"), but the widescreen resolution will compensate and I think you'll be fine.

I have the same resolution that you got, and I like it. It is a personal preference. I guess.

    Since I own both [17" 1280x1024; 15" 1280x800] I guess I can help you out a bit.

Although they may sound similar [same resolution width], they are quite different than you'd expect. To be honest, compared to my 17" desktop screen, my laptop screen does feel a bit cramped. Or maybe that's just because I like viewing my pictures and videos in full screen and when I do that with my laptop screen, the black area that makes up the "letterbox" around the image can be so huge.

Although if you're not working with big spreadsheets or editing big pictures a lot, I guess you'll find it quite nice. Actually, aside from the complaint above, I have no other problems with 1280x800. Most videos now are in widescreen format already anyway. And I'm not Excel or Photoshop enthusiast. And it's really quite nice to play in native resolution all the time. Also, things look a bit bigger compared to 17" [good for me because I have poor eyesight x_x;]

Although [lol 3 althoughs] in the end, it really comes down to personal preference. Try it yourself.

if your order is in the "processing" status, you can call up the dell sales team and ask them to change your order to include the higher resolution screen. you should have no problem. even though the 1440x900 and 1680x1050 doesn't show up on the configuration page, the representative will be able to add it in for you.
