Alright guys, maybe this belongs in a different section but when I bought my laptop I didn't consider playing games on it, but my value package came stock with the 128 mb graphics card. so that got me looking into new games coming out and I saw the game crysis. Holy cow that game looks sweet. Anyway the min req says --Nvidia 6600/X800GTO (SM 2.0), according to this webpage the 6600 ranks in 32nd place while the 8400 gs is at 38th. So does that mean I can't play it?

Or is this something only time will tell?

well, from what ive heard the x1400 is weaker than the 8400 gs, but this website shows the opposite so i dont know if you can trust these listings until someone more expierenced with gfx cards comes along

    Will it Run Crysis? Yes.
    Will it play Crysis? No..

Getting playable framerates is a different matter than just running the game. For one, the 8400 GS is just one step up from the lowest, and Crysis has some pretty high requirements... I guess it would be somewhat playable at low res, lowest settings. If you are looking for a gaming nb, look for at least a 8600GS...

shlurpee, the numbers in the leftmost column on that page are meaningless. If you sort them by score on 3DMark06 you'll see that the 8400M GS scores a little over 300 points more than the 6600. However keep in mind that the requirements from the game are going to be based on desktop cards, not notebook cards.

I can't comment on Crysis performance wise but I tried to play the demo for Lost Planet and it was pretty messed up, though it did warn that it was not indicative of the final game.

Something that I will point out is this article:

    http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3029

You'll notice that even the desktop graphics cards get killed in DirectX 10.

None of these first gen DirectX 10 cards is really going to be suitable for playing DirectX 10 games, unfortunately. Save maybe the 8800GTX or Ultra in SLI. If you can get the drivers working :D

I mean, we went from playing DirectX 9 games in 2560x1900 resolution with maxed antialiasing and anisotropic filtering at 100fps to playing DirectX 10 games at 1280x1024 at barely 40 fps on the high end systems. Something's wrong here.

Now I wouldn't go that far...The slideshow of Lost Planet I had going looked pretty. :) I don't think they intended for it to be a slideshow though.

hmm, well it was fun dreaming. Not that I was set on buying a $60 game anyway, but just watching the trailer made me want to pick up some mercenary by the throat and use him as a projectile weapon from 30 yards away.

One.. The dx10 demos out so far suffer from bad coding, without exception.
Two. There are still no mature drivers out for any nb card yet. Even the desktop cards lack good drivers, except the 8800 series.
Three. A dx10 game being playable on a nb means it'd run with frame rates of around 40-60, at WXGA, WXGA+ resolutions, on the currently available dx10 cards.. No one expects a card with a 128 bit memory bus to run the latest games maxxed out. And no nvidia dx10 card has a 256 bit bus, as of now.
Four. The difference b/w the high end and mid range cards is too much, even on the desktop segment. 128 or 96 shaders(for the 8800s) vs 32 shaders.. Simply no contest. And the HD2900XT has 320 shaders.. The mobile cards aren't even comparable...
