A great site and thanks all for being so helpful.
can the screen brightness be adjusted on the 1210? a friend has a laptop and when disconnected from the wall the screen dim's a little. Do all laptops do this?

Its a power profile. You can set the brightness to whatever you want.

Max brightness = max battery drain.

you can set two settings, one when it is connected to a power outlet (usually max brightness) and one when you are running on battery (usually lower), althought you can adjust them whenever you want to.

You can set your preffered brightness settings for both battery and ac power in the bios. Running at full brightness on battery will eat up about an hour of battery time, while in windows you can also use the function keys to raise and lower it on the fly.
