Which brand ships with new Dell laptops? Hitachi or Seagate?

Dell, like any other companies, uses whatever they can source at the time which costs them the least. I've seen pretty much ANY brands ship in their notebooks, be it Fujitsu, HGST, Seagate or Toshiba (Western Digital is relatively new to the 2.5" market and I've yet to see one in OEM form inside a Dell laptop) It also depends on the regional location of where your Dell was ordered and built, too.

For example, my XPS M1210 which was ordered in Hong Kong and built/shipped from the China plant came with a Toshiba drive. My roommate's Inspiron E1505 which was ordered in Canada and built/shipped from Malaysia came also with a Toshiba drive.

As for 2.5" 7200rpm SATA drives, you'll see a higher chance that it'll ship with a HGST (Hitachi) drive right now. There's actually a global shortage for higher capacity 2.5" 7200rpm SATA units at the moment, most online e-tailers always show no-stock or back-ordered, especially for the top 100GB capacity.

My old E1505 came with 100GB Seagate 7200RPM, and I loved it.
