Posted this in another thread, but meant to start new topic:
What would give the biggest performance increase in a Dell I9300 with all other components kept identical? 1.73Ghz Pentium M w/ 60 GB 7200 RPM HD or 1.86Ghz Pentium M w/ 40GB 4200 RPM HD?
By performance, say, overall gaming experience in Doom 3 or HL2.

I agree. When in doubt, go with the thing thats not easily upgradeable or not upgradeable ast all.

He asked for which would improve gaming performance, as I said, while a quicker HD will allow you to load stuff faster, it does nothing in-game. Most likely you will not notice any performance increase with a faster cpu as well, as newer games are gpu-bound, especially if you want to get it with a relatively slow gpu like the x300.
Personally, I notice quite a big difference in performance between a 1.6ghz PM and a 2.0ghz PM when I do stuff like DIVX encoding and ripping. Of course you can always buy a faster CPU later -- but what are you gonna do with your old one? lol I would still suggest you go for the fastest CPU you can get right now, as you can ALWAYS reuse your old slower HD if you ever feel the need to upgrade.
cheers,
