hi guys, just received my Inspiron 1420, and so far im thinking of returning it
it has a 2.4ghz processor, 3gb of memory, nvidia 8400 graphics, and a 250 gb harddrive. i thought this configuration would give me top notch performance for my uses (internet, audio, video) etc, but i guess i was wrong. i had a sony vaio vgn-cr notebook, with only 2.0 ghz and 3gb with the random intel accelerator graphics and it ran *smooth, and was very fast, and simple things like minimizing windows wouldnt look like it was struggling, like it does on this inspiron. the internet is slow, and pictures take few seconds to load. Im very disapointed, because i sold my Vaio for this inspiron, mainly cause i liked the build of the inspiron, but ended up with a nice constructed laptop, with poor performance. anyone know of a way to fix this problem? should i return it and get my money refunded and get something else, if so, any suggestions on anothet 14.1 laptop? thanks...

My studio came with a 2.16 gig processor but 4GB of RAM and its really fast. Check your CPU usage and RAM usage to see if any programs are gobbling up resources. Some of the Vista Sidebar gadgets are poorly written and have memory leaks in them which take in a lot of memory. One such gadget reached to 0.5 GB of memory while running.
If still the problem is repeating you could run a clean reinstall of Windows Vista and see if it still occurs. If it does, you can claim a return within 21 days.
My advice: Also, call up Dell and tell all the problems you are facing in the laptop and make sure the rep gives you a case ID to make sure the case is logged in DellServ (Dell's call center software). Though they have a 21 day return policy, if a system has continously faced problems from the beginning, customer care reps sometimes allow a system exchange upto 120 days, at their own discretion. -
One other suggestion. Do a erase and install with your dvds. I always do this as It gets rid of any software Dell may put on them. My Dell Studio with a 2.16 C2D and 4GB of ram screams. Good luck!

Do you have the retched anti virus trial running and sniffing out all your activities or something? Your configuration should run like a top.
I agree with the others . . . fire up the task manager and take a look at what might be hogging memory or processing cycles. Hmm, speaking of 3 gb of memory, make sure that it is reported . . . we have had people have dimms missing. If for some reason you only had the 1gb stick in there, you would be running poorly under vista. -
i have to agree. my brother has a vostro 1400 (same system just black exteror) with a 1.6ghz core 2 duo and it flies with 3gb.

If returned/replaced w/in 21 days of date of invoice = new laptop
after, 21 days = refurbished
Hope that helps!

gregv03, that means if you decide to give it back, do it quickly before the 21 day deadline runs out...you dont want to have a refurbished laptop that could have a whole new set of issues -

Check out Sony Vaio's. they look really stylish, but you would have to fork out more.
By the way, is dell charging a restocking fee for your Inspiron refund? -
You know, you should really take a little time to figure out what is going on. My 1420 runs perfect and yours should too. Get rid of the bloatware and figure out Task Manager before you return it. People that return machines because they don't know how to use them make everything more expensive for the rest of us.
