I had quite a scare with my Vostro yesterday. I put in my usual Scrubs season 4 dvd, I've used it before. The laptop wouldn't recognize the disc and when I pressed the Eject button, it was unresponsive. I was afraid that maybe I didn't press the DVD in all the way and it got caught on something, but I'm extra careful when inserting CDs and DVDs just for that reason.

After about 15 minutes of trying everything I could think of, I finally decided to restart the computer...and voila, before it even started loading Vista, I pressed the eject button and everything was fine. It recognized the disc after that.

While I'm very happy that this was a happy ending and I didn't need to make use of my warranty less than a month after actually getting the computer, has anyone had this problem before? Is it a hardware issue?

If it sticks and it's not supposed to, WD40.

    Not really :D

Anyway, I've seen it happen before...typically that is caused by a driver issue in my experience.

If it happens again, instead of restarting go to 'My Computer' and right click on the drive in question. There should be an option 'Eject' that ought to help you out. Even if the physical latch seems to have a problem, that method works for me 99% of the time. If that doesn't work though, then reboot.

The drive > eject command doesn't work with my desktop's cd-rom drive, apparently something's bent out of shape so it refuses to open unless I start prodding the drive itself. =/

Take a paper clip and unbend it and push it in the Emergency Eject hole next to the eject button only when disc is not spinning though!
