I didn't think 2GB was even an option...I'm sure you'll get your 3GB. If not, complain.

Its a brand new laptop. People just started getting the first ones in the past two weeks.

I know its frustrating, but when you are ordering something brand new, and everyone wants one... well, sh|t happens.

Look at all the people ordering the new SXPS16's with the upgraded graphics cards... they are looking at 3 week ETA's as well.

There was no harm in him asking, and not everyone has the time to browse a 40 page long thread. Isn't the point of these threads to help?

Well it looks like Dell has raised the price of the 14z by 200 dollars depending on how you configure it!!! Had I waited one or two days more, I would have been kicking myself!

The configuration I got was ruby red case, back-lit keyboard, 900p screen and the 8 cell battery for 822 dollars (of course I had the student discount too).

The going price for that configuration is just about 1000 dollars now!!! (979 to be exact without tax included). 250 dollars more expensive, they must have seen how demanding the laptop was! People were willing to pay the price but I wonder if people will be willing to spend at the MINIMUM 799 for a base stock 14z PC?!

Just so everyone knows, there have been NO upgrades to the stock PC. ?

I think I recall the 14z had high definition audio 2.0 just recently, but when I ordered mine (and as it is now) it says it is v2.2

Wonder what the difference is? New Hardware or new driver?

I talked with a Dell rep and they said that the 2.2 version adds the ability to add an external subwoofer (in addition to what external setup you could do normally).
I asked if the 2.2 version was a hardware change from the 2.0 version and the rep said yes, but Im not sure whether I should take that with a grain of salt or believe it.
They also said that the 2.2 version would have better sound quality overall (I wasnt able to get the rep to be clear enough to say if they were referring to the external speakers attached, the stock speakers or both).

I fundamentally disagree. There is harm in continuously asking the same questions or questions that have already been answered. It makes it even harder to find the relevant information in an already large thread. God saw fit to give us a search function, and it should be used.

Not every contributor has the time to post in response to someone asking the same question they answered yesterday. Why is your time worth more than mine?

I do not remember where or when I saw this, but I DID see this anomaly with my 14z. It arrived with 3GB, and I can only imagine that the 2GB reflects the size of the memory stick that is in addition to the soldered 1GB.x

    Worry not.

I originally ordered the 14z with the chainlink and in the midst of processing, I HAD to change the cover to the ruby red option because I wouldnt be able to be content with the chainlink design.
I am glad that I am getting the ruby red design just if I have to look at the design, it would remind me that I could have changed it to a different color. Those things bother me more than they would another person.
For those that like the chainlink design, Im sure you are happy with it and be sure not to take my preference as offensive.

    :D :D :D :D :D

    My order shipped today!!

    First ordered: May 28th
Cancelled by Dell and re-ordered: June 17th
Cancelled by me and re-ordered the way I wanted it but was told by Dell on May 28th couldn't be done and I'd have to wait for delivery and return it: June 19th.
    Estimated delivery date: July 22nd.
Actual Delivery date: I'm guessing July 13th or 14th.

It's plum purple (tired of blue and the red seemed a bit too intense for me),
    P8600, 3 GB, 900p, 500 GB 7200 RPM, backlit keyboard, bluetooth.

I left out the card reader, as I'll only need that if/when I travel with it and my camera, and I can get an Expresscard card reader locally for the same price. Gotta economize where I can. ;)

Already got my plum purple Nano travel mouse. Awesome little mouse. Tiny, nearly invisible receiver that stores inside the mouse.

I folks. Long time lurker, first time poster. ;)

First, I wanted to thank you all for answering so many of my questions about this unit (though it did take me the better part of 2 evenings to get all the way through this thread.) :D

After reading all your comments, as well as other on-line research and a visit to BB to see it in person, I pulled the trigger over lunch today and ordered my 14Z (using my company's affiliate discount.) I went with:

    2.4 GHz processor
    3GB ram
    320GB/7200RPM Hard drive
    standard screen
    backlit keyboard
upgraded wireless-N (because I plan to get a new router very soon)
8 cell battery (which I thank you for confirming that it wasn't larger)
    bluetooth.

I think that's all the salient facts (but feel free to ask if you want to know more).

Oh, in Ruby Red. I'm a red kinda guy. ;)

Got a great deal on the build, and it's supposed to ship (emphasis on "supposed") on 7/20 and be in my hands on 7/24 (fingers crossed.)

I had been waffling for a couple of weeks between the new 13" MacBook Pro and the 13" Studio XPS. I liked the Mac a lot, and really enjoyed using the new gesture-sensitive touchpad. But, I had concerns about compatibility issues with some of my existing peripherals ... and the cost.

I loved the XPS, but was concerned about all the reported problems with overheating, locking up, etc.

Then I stumbled across the 14Z, and it had everything I really wanted and none of the stuff I knew I wouldn't use. I'm not a "heavy user", no gaming; just mostly surfing the web, minor photo manip, iTunes, word processing. I already have an external DVD drive, and was actually psyched to find that the 14Z left that out. I really wanted small, thin(ish) and light(ish) for travel. But, I also wanted something fast and that could last me for 3-4 years. So, here I am.

Anyway, just wanted to pop in and say hi and thanks again for all your shared combined wisdom. I'll let you know when it arrives.

    Happy ... er ... waiting. ;)

I wish they had a better color green, not so pee green like what they have now. If it was darker like a normal green or even more towards a forest green, I might have opted for the green case.
Blue looks very nice but blue by itself, if looked at too long, can make people feel depressed! Green has the bluish qualities but more earthy tones.
    Just MHO.

I wonder what the actual "spring green" looks like. I'm sure it is different than the photos. ALL of the colors I've seen in person look different (better in my opinion) than the pictures on Dell's site. The colors just don't photograph well. Midnight Blue is a really good name for the blue because it is A LOT darker in person than the photos on Dell's site.

Here is a pretty good photo of what the Midnight Blue looks like. That is IF it had a bright light shining directly at the center of it. In person it looks more like the color at the edges, not the center. Which to me is a lot darker than what most of Dell's photos show.
If that is the case with the green, I wonder if it is also more like the color at the edges of this photo and not the center color?

I know that the 14z can support the T4200, T6400, T6500, T6600, P8600 and the T9550 CPU's at 800mhz and 1066mhz respectively. Anyone know what other Intel CPU's the motherboard can handle? Im just curious if there are chips out there that I can snag as an upgrade other than these CPU's (I have the T4200).
I plan to eventually upgrade the CPU from the T4200, 800mhz all the way to the T9550, 1066mhz, but that will be a long time until CPU prices fall and no one wants these CPUs anymore, but instead, want all the latest technology.

Hm, checked again and its still there. I'm looking at the US website and I see a bunch of back to school sales going on. I also still only see basically a preconfigured 14z in 3 flavors as none of them seem to have upgradable parts for me.

For example, the most expensive config is the $909 - $160 which brings it to $750. This now comes with only a T6500 and a 500GB HD.

One thing I did check though is that all the regular configs are still there when I access the EPP website... weird.

Oh, and thanks for testing the battery with the program. I look forward to the results.

Dell.ca still has all the processor options. Dell.com doesn't.

Dell.com also doesn't have the 5GB memory, 900p option, 8-cell battery, 7200 RPM HD and backlit keyboard available. They all remain available on the Canadian site.

I have a Studio 17 in blue, and I'd say that's a pretty good representation. Not glossy at all. Feels (but isn't) rubberized on top. You could use it as a napkin after eating fried chicken* and it still wouldn't show fingerprints.

    * but don't.

Oh i see the catch now, they offer Microsoft OFFICE home/student...

You can also upgrade from the T4200 to T6650 for less than it was to upgrade to T6400.

Best option in canadian store right now is to upgrade the entry configuration, costs 100$ less to have the same as the other one

Apparently they test every laptop. What is the test? Probably "does it boot?". I have my doubts about the scrutiny of said tests based on some of the defects that dell laptops ship with (ie. missing battery for someone on this thread).

Combine that with a few days for shipping, a weekend where no one is working, and voila...you've got your week. Also, the more rural you are, the longer the shipping will take.

Sounds like the longer end of a normal timeline to me.

Is it possible that you just arent seeing one of the upgrades on the more expensive pre-configs, like wifi card, HDD, software, or warranty? Before I ordered mine I thought I saw something fishy like you are describing, but it turned out to be the WiFi card which they didn't list on the highlights.

I've seen one picture of 900p screen posted in this forum but it was just an empty desktop. Can someone with this resolution 14z laptop post a picture with a few applications opened like browser and word?
