I'm not sure if this has been brought up before on this forum, and I'm not good at reading warranties themselves because of the terms they use.
So anyways, from your knowledge what is allowed under warranty? What will void your dell warranty?
I know some manufacturers wont allow any upgrade other than memory and some that will allow more than that.

Upgrades are not covered by your warranty but they do not void your warranty. Your warranty also does no cover any damage caused by these parts or damage occured while you had the case open. Upgrades include anything that can be officially purcharsed with your system, so like ram, hdd, video card that is specifically offered for your system, etc. For example, if you upgraded your RAM, your new RAM sticks aren't covered, but the rest of your laptop still is.
Modifications will void your warranty. A good example is upgrading the video card to something that is not offered with your system. With the 9300, the highest end card we can get is the nVidia go 6800, but you could use the ultra 6800 or 7800 if you change a couple of things including the modifying the BIOS. If you do use the ultra 6800 or 7800, this will void your warranty because Dell does not specifically offer these cards for the 9300. Overclocking also fits into this category.

So it would seem that Dell isnt as Strict as other manufacturers are. I was expecting overclocking and modifcations to be out of it.

Yeah, they really aren't that strict. You have the freedom to do upgrades, but it might be a good idea to save the old part in case you have problems later on down the road. Dell might ask you to insert the old part back in to help troubleshoot (but i've never have had this happen yet).

I am only looking to do Upgrades on Memory and HDD on the B130...possibly Processor too if I can? But that'd be further down the road.

The processor is probably going to be very difficult, but there is instructions on the web. I'm not really sure if this would void your warranty. Its the one part that i'm not really sure of

Well, I think when I do upgrade my processor it would be when the laptop is out of warranty, I'm not sure if I'll extend the warrenty when the time comes. I would assume that you could upgrade the processor and if any problems arise and determining its not the new processor you could send it in for repair, but you'd have to put the older processor back in.

Processors have some kinda sticker on it. SO it will most likely void your warranty.

I recently went with the M170 over the 9300, partially because I know I will be able to "upgrade" to the 7800GTX later on and keep my full warranty. However, I do plan on replacing the HDD and adding more memory, which the warranty obviously wouldn't cover those parts, however the warranty on the rest of the M170's components would still be in-tact. -
Yes that's what I meant. Modifying the bios and upgrading to cards that aren't specifically offered for your laptop will void the warranty.
As for the processor, most of the parts in the laptop do have a sticker, so I really don't see how the sticker would affect the warranty. My reasoning about whether the processor would be covered or not is because it is one of the main components. Its not something simple to upgrade like the RAM or HDD, and it can very easily cause problems throughout the whole system.
[edit] I did some research on Dell's website, and it states that it does not support processor upgrades, so I guess that means it would void the warranty.

LOL, you don't even want to know about the hatred. Personally, I don't like the quality of their Inspiron systems, but that's a whole other thread.

What type of lappy do you have? I personally like the I9300, couple of things could have been better. The screen seems a bit woobly...could have had a 3rd hinge...but again that is off-topic. Just thought that I would ask. -
Specs are below. I've got my laptop in April and i've only had minor problems like my keyboard is all slick and shiny on the home keys. I also don't lie the touchpad/touch keys cause they just don't feel right to me. My biggest problem with my laptop is that the screw on the lower right side of the screen broke, and now the bezel is starting to crack. You can actually see a crack from the hinge are to the screw, and its causing the lid to be loose.
So far, nothing to major, but little things that I didn't expect out of a $3000 laptop. -
I mean if you spent that much on a laptop, I'd as dang well get some good warrenty on that. -
I've thought about it, but right now I'm in school, and really can't afford to send it in. They wanted to send a tech out, but I'm never home either, so that wasn't going to work. Besides, I do my own upgrades/repairs. I pretty much just use my warranty for my parts on my laptop...yes I know I'm strange. I'm a girl that actually does computer repairs
I'll probably end up having it sent in this week cause it doesn't look like they are going to send me a new lid. I might be upgrading my screen to the truelife, but I haven't decided yet.
I'm not really sure how their repair department is. I've seen a couple of complaints about their at home techs not knowing what they are doing or putting the laptop back together wrong, using wrong parts etc. -
Now, I wonder if you can do the trulife upgrade after you boguht it (considering if they have it a option for that model) otherwise you'll have to send it into PixelBrite, which is the only company I know out there that will do that kind of thing.
I know for my 1300 I will be sending it in to them to have it done since Dell doesnt offer that option. It'll probably be done when my warranty is out -
I checked into it a couple of weeks ago. With my 9300, I can upgrade to the truelife. You can order the screen from Dell's Spare Parts department, and replace the screen yourself, which is easy to do. Dell has instructions for every upgrade pratically known to man on their website. Of course, it won't be covered by my warranty, but oh well. I really don't like my screen.
But like you said, you can only upgrade to the parts that are availble for your laptop. -
well just by knowing a lot of my friends that have had dells, the tech support is all from india and is really bad. like theyll be like i dont know the answer please let me forward you to our specialist then the specialist is like let me forward you to the admin then the admin is like let me forward u to the company owner than the owner will be all like let me forward you to god.... ya.... kinda annoying imho

The best thing to do is the chat...it may take a little longer, but at least you don't have to say "what" 10 times while chatting to the person. I found the tech support chat to be well worth it...no language barrier.
