I bought a vostro 1500 in November, and a couple of days ago it started freezing up when I left it by itself for a couple of hours. Ctrl Alt Delete didn't work. Upon restart I ran the dell diagnostic tools, and got some error codes on Hdd tests. I ran a 3rd party disk scan, and found some bad sectors.
Armed with the error codes, I called up Dell tech support, and told them of the problem, including the exact error codes. The technician asked me if I could run the test one more time, but since I didn't have a couple of hours on my hands, I told him it would take too long and I couldn't do it at the moment. He said, Ok, a new hard drive should arrive in 2-3 business days. That was yesterday afternoon. Today, the new hard drive is here. What's more, I got a free upgrade from a 160 gig hdd, to a 250 gig
I must say I am impressed by their tech support as of now. I guess when you're dealing with the small business tech support and you sound like you half know what you are talking about, they don't mess around haha.
Now all I have to do is decide whether to clone my old hdd and not deal with installing everything again, or just start from scratch and do dual boot vista+xp, or vista+XX Xor any combination thereof...

Wait, so there's a shortage on hard drives at Dell for the 250GBs but they sent you one? That's great for you and I'm really happy for you, but it makes me go ??? at the "Oh, we're short on hard drives at the moment" line in the April 22nd thread!

They've done right by me.

I think it's the 250gb 7200rpm drives that are on backorder, I'm assuming that the one that they sent you is a 5400rpm. It's still pretty good nonetheless.

Yes, it's illegal for them to use refurb components in a brand new system. I think Gateway was caught doing that a few years back and got smacked.
+1 for Dell in my book
