I've just removed vista from my dell 6400 and put XP Pro on, i remember on vista, if i clicked on the battery icon, id have the option of "high performance" "balanced" and "power save"
What im not sure of is, did this option limit the duo processor to one core, because if it did, then im not sure how this will work in XP, as there is no option for this, and I wouldnt like to run XP knowing im only ever going to bee using one core?

Power saving modes DO NOT cut out a whole core. That would defeat the purpose of buying dual core cpus. What it does it it throttles your cpu to a slower clock, at the same time lowering the voltage of it. This produces less heat and takes less power to run, thus saving power and reducing heat output. The different stages of this power saving just meant that the cpu was throttled to varying clock speeds and voltages. A 2.0GHz cpu can be made to throttle back to any speed from 1GHz to it's max. So "max battery" option prolly meant it throttled all the way to the minimum speed/voltage. Balanced prolly mean it throttled down to 1.5GHz or something like that.

That doesn't answer the question though, sorry.
I want to know, how do I ensure that XP runs these cores at the maximum capacity, because unlike Vista, I can't click "high performance" etc. -
You should be able to click on the battery icon in the task bar and select high performance...
-
Right click Desktop
Left click on Properties
Left click on Screen Saver tab
Left click on Power...
Left click on Advanced
Check box next to Always show icon on the taskbar
Left click on Power Schemes tab
Left click on down arrow in Power schemes box
Left click on Always On
Left click on OK
Left click on OK
In the future, just left click on the power plug if on AC power, or the battery if on battery in the lower right of the taskbar, and left click on the power profile you want to use. -
I've installed that Laptop Hardware monitor thing, it has all the options.

But yeah, if NHC works for u, keep using that.
