This is showing up in device manager after reinstalling Vista from the CD. I've installed all the drivers I can think of off the Dell CD, and everything seems to be working fine.

Does anyone know what the 'Base system device' is?

It can be various things. Check out if you have your media card reader up to date and don't forget to install the latest Intel Chipset drivers.

I thought it could have been the card reader, so I installed the drivers for that but it was still there. I've also tried the chipset drivers, but that didn't get rid of it either.

Expand your IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers branch and see if you have Ricoh Memory Stick, SD-MMC and xD-Picture Card controllers present. If not then you are missing the Ricoh card reader drivers.

I know you say you've installed them but maybe they didn't take.
