jay337,
The list of drivers for the Vostro 1700, and the order they should be installed in, is:
* Dell Notebook System Software
* Intel® Mobile Chipset Driver
* Mobile Intel® GMA X3100 Video Controller
* O2Micro® Cardbus/Smart Card Controller
* Intel Flash Cache Logic Chip (Intel Turbo Memory)
* Broadcom® NetXtreme 5755 Gigabit Integrated Network Controller
* Wireless driver (if applicable)
* IDT® STAC 9205 Audio Driver
* MDC (modem) driver
* Dell Touch Pad Driver
* Bluetooth® driver and stack
All of these drivers are available from the Dell support website ( http://support.dell.com).
If you did not install the notebook system software that might be the cause of the problem, as that is basically Dell specific additions to the chipset software. If you have installed all of these drivers, then second Chelet's suggestion of double checking the mouse properties in the Control Panel (that is usually where the problem is when "extra" features are not working as desired).
Did the scrolling work before you reinstalled?

If you are using a mouse as well as the touch pad, remove the mouse (device), then reinstall the Synaptics touch pad software and try setting it up. You may have to turn on that function in touchpad control settings.

I already try all this things ! theres is no synaptics driver for windows vista 64 in the dell support web page ! I downloaded the driver for it on the synaptics website but it not resolved my problem !
-
If you open up Device Manager, what does it list under "Mice and other pointing devices"? If you have a driver installed it should read "Dell Touchpad". If it reads "PS/2 Compatible Mouse" then the driver is the only problem (since you indicated the touchpad worked before you did the reinstall).
Did the driver Gobo suggest work? It is for the Alps on an M65 workstation, but none of the documentation i've seen tells me whether the 1700 Vostro has the Alps or Synaptics touchpad installed (the specs just list the touchpad dimensions).

Would the driver from Gobo work with my Vostro 1500 ? I too have two base system devices that have no driver in Device Manager and my cursor jumps all over the place when I am trying to type.
I do have Logitech SetPoint 4 for Vista 64 bit installed for when I am an my desktop with a full mouse plugged in. Keyboard is set to standard Mircosoft 102 key keyboard. -
reRge0039, From what I can see the Vostro 1500 and 1700 both use the same touch pad. If it works on the 1700 it should work on your 1500 as well. Unfortunately, I don't know if it works or not as we don't have any Vostro systems with 64bit Vista installed that I can test it on (since Dell does not ship systems with 64bit Vista that I know of).
If your mouse cursor is jumping around a lot, make sure you check the sensitivity settings in the Control Panel, as if it is an optical mouse (which most are now) make sure nothing is interfering with the light. From personal experience, a single cat hair in the light/sensor area can make the cursor do some very strange things when you are trying to use it.

THanks for that. It only jumps about when I am typing, which I presume is the touchpad. How can I adjust that (or better still, turn it off when I am typing ) ?
Thanks for any help -
The touchpad driver should add at least one tab to the Mouse Properties window in the Control Panel. That will include options to adjust the sensitivity and speed of motion from the touchpad, as well and enable/disable tap-to-click (the most common things people want to change). It is supposed to also have settings for the scrolling options on those touchpad that support it (I have not had a chance to actually look at the touchpad properties on a Vostro, so I don't know if any changes were made to it from previous Dell notebooks).

My Vostro 1700 has an Alps touchpad. I don't run Vista 64 on my notebook though so I haven't tried that driver yet.
It shouldn't hurt to try it though. If it doesn't work you can just rollback to the previous driver. -
Got the AlPS driver on under Vista 64, but can't see anywhere to turn it off when typing or disable tap to click.
Any ideas ? -
Gobo:
Thanks for the link to the dell driver. Installed it on my Vostro 1400 running Windows Vista 64 and everything seems to be working except for the side scroll function. Yours and other posts really help make up for the shortcomings of the Dell Vostro support pages!
To the Dell CAs:
After performing a clean install of Windows Vista 64 on my Vostro 1400, I have noticed that the Dell Vostro driver download pages are lacking many of the drivers necessary for even basic functionality in Vista 64. Examples of needed drivers include:
- Alps Glidepoint
- nVidia 8400M GS
- Dell Wireless 355 Bluetooth
- Intel Matrix Manager (crucial for installing vista on an AHCI system!)
- Broadcom Integrated 10/100 network interface
The list goes on and on. Hopefully, you can bring this problem to the attention of those who maintain the Vostro support pages. I can't see Dell selling a lot of Vostros in the future with the current (poor) state of driver support. -
Logitech Setpoint 4 for Vista x64 runs BOTH the 32-bit program and the 64-bit program simultaneously. You need to go into the program files and changes the name of the SetPoint32.exe or just delete it so it doesn't run and cause problems. -
I had the same problem with my vostro 1500 but I installed the drivers from the cd it came with it and it solved it. Just installl the driver restart the computer then go to options and disable touch pad and it fixed it perfectly. If you dont have a cd with drivers, then here is the link for the dell touch pad drivers for the vostro 1500, man this was driving me nuts.
