I am having trouble with my Dell Inspiron 1300 Laptop. It is two years old and I am known for personalising the settings to the extent that I end up disabling or breaking things! :p

Umm, basically my CD/DVD drive is 'corrupted' and I need some help - I've tried putting my problem through the troubleshooter but it didn't work. :(

My CD/DVD drive will read DVDs, but it doesn't read audio CDs or other such things - including data disks.

    I have tried
    • Using a disk cleaner
    • trying various different audio CDs
    • breathing on the disks
    • using system restore

Before the CDs weren't working, I was recently told by the computer that I needed to 'format' CDs before I could put data onto them.   I have never needed to do this before, so why now?, I thought. I did it anyway and ended up banging the laptop out of frustration. It then said the formatting had been cancelled. Oops. :p
From then on no CD would work except DVDs. My uncle seems to think the drive may be broken, but if anyone else has any ideas, please let me know!

Confused fourteen year old, so-called 'compuer whiz' xx

    HELP PLEASE! :) :) :)

What software did you use for the formatting?

What model is the optical drive?
    Is it a TSSTCorp (Toshiba-Samsung)?
I really hope your answer is no.

And don't hit your poor computer lol.

Can you boot from a disc when you start the computer (for notebook, press f12 upon boot up for a one time boot)? If your bios still detect your ODD then you can try to either update the firmware or uninstall the ODD from the device manager and reboot. Hopefully the MS's firmware can fix your problem.

I didn't mean to hit it, I just got frustrated is all. :p And no it's not a TSSTCorp (Toshiba-Samsung) thing. It's a TOSHIBA MK4026GAX. Is that the same thing?

    FFZERO:
umm ... that makes my braiiin hurt. lol. :p I did try uninstalling and reinstalling the drive, but it still didn't work. I also tried pressing update driver//roll back driver but nothing was available.
What is a bios//bio and what is an ODD? I'm afraid my computer jargon is a little rusty. :p Could you make it simpler? Thanks!

Thanks everyone ... hope this helps you help me. :)
