    Hi:

Today, around lunch, out of the blue, the screen of my dell xps m1710 laptop went blank - that is black. After I restarted the computer, the boot screen showed green/yellow vertical dotted lines in groups of 4. When I booted up windows in normal mode, the screen went blank when it got to the log-in dialog. It worked ok when I started windows in the safe mode, and after I logged in there were no vertical lines.

Now, after I let the computer to cool off, windows starts fine in normal mode but after a few minutes of usage the screen goes blank again and if I restart the computer right away I get the vertical lines. I run the diagnostics and everything seemed to be fine.

I called Dell to have the video card replaced but I am afraid that the original problem might be not be with the video card.

It might be an overheating problem... Is there any software that I can use to see the temperature of the video card and maybe other hardware components settings. It would also be nice to be able to see the fans state and control the fans.

Could it be dust accumulated in the laptop? I didn't take it apart because I don't want to void the warranty.

    Any ideas?

    Thank you

yes, id try nvidia system tools 6.02 or HWmonitor
i prefer nvidia system tools because it provides more info

and it sounds like you have either:

    A. another defective GPU (son of a)
    B. a messed up LCD

    Most likely it is A.

It was the video card that failed. The diagnostics returned a bunch of these messages:

    Error code 5300:0119
Msg: Detected a failure while writing and reading video memory. Video mode Dh (here a bunch of resolutions). Address A00400h, expected to read 0h, but read 202020202h instead

I guess I'll wait for the dell technician.
