So i've had my xps m1530 for 3 years and a few months. Recently though, the screen has started dimming so it's gotten quite dark. It's also started developing these dark bands (even less lit) at the bottom. When I bought it, I believe the screen was LED LCD.

Do I need an inverter? a new backlight? or a completely new screen? I was under the impression that LED screens last longer than 3 years and i wouldn't need to replace it.

I had similar symptoms happen to my M1330 a year ago. The first thing you can try is *carefully* take apart the screen bezel and ensure the LCD cable (from the motherboard at the bottom of the screen, approximately right above the power button area) is plugged in fully. Mine was hanging off halfway, causing troubles.

I'll give that a try this weekend and see how it goes.

What are your specs, it's possible that your M1530 could be at the end of it's life if you have the 8600M GT.

It's hard to tell, I think the flaw was in the motherboard design and the gpu, but if it goes out you can get another unused motherboard from eBay, if you are that attached to your laptop.

Yeah, I just started reading up on it and its flaws. Life time is approximately 3 years, and since I've had mine for 3 years, it's practically a ticking time bomb.

Yeah, perhaps it's time for a new laptop, if your laptop can make it through the winter, I think the Ivy Bridge should be ready soon.
