    Having both units, I wont say there is any performance difference between the two if spec'ed similarly.

    The difference is
    1) M1330
    formfactor, design, discrete graphics, Media card reader

    2) D630
    legacy support (serial, PCMCIA etc.), longevity, modular bay, docking station support

    The D630 is quite a bit heavier (a good 1/3 kilo more) but much more solidly built, so if you are rougher user, you are much better off with the D630.

    Not quite sure what is "N series", maybe just something dell offers in your geographic area.

    If you need a database on these, get at least 2gb.

    What I love about my D630 is its battery life, >12 hours with the 9 cell and 6 cell media bay battery. Probably its thrump card as a business laptop.

    Hard to tell the difference bet/ N series and non-N series, because in the US there's no such N series. Either way, the Latitude is the business class Dell, whereas the XPS is the high end consumer class. For what you want to do, both are fine. How ever the Latitude has 3 years warranty, and cheaper, so I think you're better off with the Latitude.

    N-Series usually refers to DELL’s open source offerings ( Linux). As others have said, Latitude is good for business use (docking station, better build etc..), and M1330 for entertainment/gaming (slightly better Dedicated graphics??[NVS 135 is almost similar to 8400M GS] , remote control, MediaDirect, HDMI etc..).

    Will there be any compatiblity issue with windows xp because d630 comes with opens sourse?

    I thought xps means more perfomance, so if you have same spec for latitude xps or other inspiron then there wont be any difference of performance between them?

    No, If you have same components then identical performance. XPS notebooks are usually aimed at gaming and entertainment while Latitudes for Business. Main differences between M1330 and D630 are: size, design, weight, extra Multimedia features and warranty options. Take a look at some of the reviews for more information.

    There is absolutely no difference between the N-series and the normal D630 except for pre-installed Windows. You can install both Windows Vista and XP on D630N since both OSs are shipped with the regular D630. Drivers for both versions are available at support.dell.com

    Sounds like the m1330 is just for you then.

    I was in the same situation......trying to decide between the D630 and the m1330. I went with the m1330 and don't regret the decision at all. It is by far the best looking laptop that Dell has ever produced, and performance wise, I've got no complaints.

    1330 = 13.3" screen with maximum of WXGA 1280x800

    630 = 14" screen with maximum of WXGA+ 1440x900
