i am having a problem where when the power source is disconnected, the screen goes very dim. i have tried adjusting the brightness in high performance mode to max, yet it is still noticeably dimmer. i did reinstall vista w/ the "remove bloatware" tutorial, so could it be that i missed a driver? or is there another way to increase the brightness other than under the settings

Try setting it in your bios. Mine stays the same brightness with or without the power cable if I set them both to max in the bios/power settings.

IIRC, you need to first set the illumination level in the BIOS and then also in the Windows/Vista power setting that is in effect.
