I am getting service on my xps m1530 to get my 8600m gt replaced... I have heard about all of the issues nvidia is having with these and am wondering if I am going to get another bad one that will have to be replaced again or will get one that is fixed?

It's supposedly been fixed on all newer chips, but unfortunately for you, you're going to get a refurbished board that was probably made before the fix. Like havoc said, it will be a surprise, but odds are against you.

Take it apart, get the manufacture date off the board (actually try SIW first [ http://www.gtopala.com/] and see if that gives you it), and compare it to the date nVidia chips were no longer defective. And I do not know this date, you will have to do some research unless someone here knows and posts it for you.

According to nVidia and Dell technicians chips produced during or after August this year are non defective.

The 8600 vid chip is embedded on the xps1530 motherboard. You are getting a motherboard replacement.

Tech support diagnosed a defective 8600 vid chip on my xps1530 in August.
They sent a refurb motherboard (mfr last Spring). So it probably contains another bad 8600 vid card.

Most likely I will see heat issues from the embedded 8600 vid card
within a year. Good thing I have a 3 yr CC warranty.

i realize that.. when they came to replace your motherboard, were they fairly gentle with the computer? did it have any damage done to it by the technician? I am very particular about my computer and taking care of it. It still looks like it is brand new.

also, I talked to a supervisor in customer support who told me that if it is the defective GPU on the motherboard to just refuse to let the tech put it in and they will send me a brand new computer.

It'll last you til your next laptop purchase most likely. I this computer I had right now however was an XPS with a defective chip and I have kept it for 3 years it would be defective. That's the only thing that worries me. I probably won't replace my laptop that I get for a bit and it comes with anything defective like that where it will fail soon after 3 years most likely then I really want to avoid it.

I encourage you to read this post which poses this very question to Lionel Menchaca of Dell and then his response. I think he basically answers the question by not answering the question. You be the judge.

Probably most of the refurbished motherboards were refurbished because of the GPU so they would have a new GPU on them so hopefully it would be one of the newer ones.

Oh boy, I'm about to order my XPS 1530 tomorrow, and now I'm kinda scared because of the nVidia GPU issue :( Somebody posted that the GPUs manufactured since August are free of the issue, can somebody confirm/prove this?

i honestly think it's nothing to be afraid about if you bought warranty. If not, then i would be worried, but even without the gpu issue, i would not bet on a dell being completely free of issues for more than two years.

This is the best I can give you.

Notice that my GPU broke down soon after I got my new mobo, getting a brand new replacement now.

As I watched the tech replace the motherboard we talked about the lack of adequate ventilation. He advised the real concern with the 1530 is overheating, and component failure, should the fan fail.

I never liked the A08 or A09 BIOS because (as I have been told) it keeps the fan on continuously. This seems like a stupid solution to the 8600M GT overheating concerns.

Did you buy the 3yr CC warranty?

The A09 bios does NOT keep the fan running constantly.
    That is affirmative bull****.

Did you notice your fan running 24/7? Just try and concentrate on the noise and you will see that 3/4 of the time it doesnt and really if you are playing games, watching movies or anything intensive then it will of course kick in...that's a given.
