Erm yes you can. Firstly been told by a dell engineer that it is fine. Also my mate just bought a backlit keyboard off ebay and fitted it to his studio without a hitch. I know its a different laptop but it is done exactly the same way, just need to wait for xps 15 keyboards to pop up on the web.

I really damn annoyed with the UK version not getting Backlit as standard as it states we would on the site. Also I confirmed at the time of order wiht a Dell Chat session on the website that the UK spec machine I was about to order would have one! The Chap lied to me!

This is the one thing (apart from possible thermal paiste problems as my fan constantly runs) that has been annoying about the laptop. Otherwise its great! :)

That you don't know for sure because it's possible that the XPS without the backlit keyboard has not the right connector installed to upgrade to the backlit keyboard.
Anyway I'm hoping I'll be proven wrong and it will be possible... (Doesn't have a ba keyboard neither...Dell Germany doesn't offer it at the moment)

A Dell technician told me that the keyboard is not available at the moment for Latin America, but when the backlit keyboard is available I'll be able to change it without problems.

Ok that's what they told me too but I don't trust them that much... They even say I can't change it myself without losing the warranty.

Re the fan, repaste yourself or get Dell to replace the laptop. You shouldn't accept a major defect (or any defect for that matter)

I know for sure I can ;) I took my xps apart to repaste and add an SSD, my motherboard has the backlit keyboard cable connector.

Ok :) Than mine has it too... What about losing warranty? Three Dell reps told me that I'll lose it by trying to upgrade myself

Of course they will tell you that. They want you to pay for someone to come out and do it.

Just keep your original keyboard and make sure you are careful completing the change (Removing the keyboard is so easy and takes about 5 minutes). If in the future you have to send your laptop in for a warranty repair, just put the original keyboard back on

no problem, now we just need to find a source of backlit keyboards! I am sure they will turn up on ebay soon, I am even contemplating installing a US backlit keyboard as it is not too different from a UK keyboard

Don't know if I have been fed a pack of lies but a Dell rep just told me that the UK machine doesnt even support a backlit keyboard being installed. Let alone them not being available at present. Which is a bit worrying for me as I was just about to buy an XPS 15.

I would highly doubt that being true as I don't think Dell is making two motherboards, one for US and one for UK, for the XPS machines. I think he was more trying to convince you to buy now and not wait for the keyboard.

Does anyone else not understand why there are these differences in spec, given that they are all manufactured in the same place? Surely US consumers can't be more in need of backlit keyboards than UK consumers?

Good that the UK machines do support the backlit keyboard.
It's rather a mute point for me now as they dont have the FHD screen either in the UK anymore. Spoken to dell customer services early this morning and throughout the day but heard nothing actually about the stock levels etc. Now i'm being told to wait till monday to find out! Surely a simple call would have worked?

It's obviously just American favouritism, they probably had low stock of backlit keyboards so gave them all to America. Disgraceful. Anyone finds a source, ie ebay please post it.

I'm in the UK, bought one of these (The i5 version with 4GB memory and 1GB GT420M).

Don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic laptop but I really wanted a backlit keyboard as all the reviews on youtube had them, the agent on the phone was adamant that it wasn't an option.

Great to hear that we should be able to get them soon!!

Anyone fancy doing a youtube tutorial on how to fit them when they arrive?

I did see some older tutorials on youtube made by dell technicians themselves, so who knows, maybe they'll do one for us when these come out.

    Hi there,

    I have just ordered a custom-build UK XPS 15.

For anyone interested in the backlit UK keyboard, I have been told by a senior support technician that I will definitely be able to upgrade when one becomes available.

He said I will be able to ring the parts department and they will be able to ship me one and I can swap it over myself. The new UK version simply isn't in stock yet.

Even better, he has written in an email to me to confirm I will definitely be able to upgrade.

He said it shouldn't be too long, I hope he's right about that too. He would seem to know his stuff though since he's put it in writing.
