The $20 is just a bit of software... nothing in the hardware configuration is different (as far as I know). I had the same option with my Studio XPS 1645 and looking back, it was in my opinion a waste of $20. I have long since removed the software and have never looked back.

Please someone correct me though if this has changed and they actually put in a different soundcard with this option.

i'm also guessing theres no change in hardware since the software does work on laptops WITHOUT choosing that upgrade.

the x-fi is software that can enhance your sound. I would get it if you game since it allows for EAX4.0 and Alchemy, but you can also get it for "free" through modded drivers (not sure if it's legal...)

It's not legal. A mere mention or a link of how to circumvent their drm would get you an infraction or account suspension here.
