i received my studio xps 13
three days ago and when i first boot , the computer completely freezes up and i had to restart 3 times before i mange to boot it up ,, after using the laptop for around 10 mints i got the same problem again the computer completely freezes up and keep doing that for around an hour , so i decided to make fresh install windows vista ultimate 32bit , the same problem again but this time it takes around 3 to 4 hours between each freeze ,, i run Everest diagnoses utility and i got what i think is a over heat problem

    --------[ Sensor ]-------------------------------------------------------------

    Sensor Properties:
Sensor Type CPU, HDD, ACPI, nVIDIA MCP
    GPU Sensor Type Diode (NV-Diode)

    Temperatures:
    CPU 69 °C (156 °F)
    CPU #1 / Core #1 65 °C (149 °F)
    CPU #1 / Core #2 65 °C (149 °F)
    MCP 71 °C (160 °F)
    GPU1: GPU Diode 64 °C (147 °F)
    GPU2: GPU Diode 66 °C (151 °F)
    Seagate ST9250421ASG 42 °C (106 °F)

this temperatures under a normal use like chat , internet surfing ,,, etc.

the laptop is extremely hot under and above the upper left corner where is the CPU which can easily burn your hand if you keep it for while .... and generally warm in the other areas like the palm rest ,

when i do some simulation task for my work i got a CPU temperature up to 78 °C
is this by any how normal do you think that i should ask for a replacement from dell ,,, im totally disappointed with this laptop.
any suggestion what i should do.
    sorry for my bad English,

Mine runs a bit cooler than yours, around 40C for the CPU and 60C for the GPU. Looks like your CPU might not be cooling properly. Bad thermal paste application by Dell maybe.

Temps aren't horrible. They're not high enough to freeze up the computer.

Try do some sort of hard drive scan. Sounds like the hard drive having trouble with reading.

For instance, shut down the computer, press the power button while holding down the Fn key. This should start the computer in to Dell Diagnostics. From here run a hard drive test and post the results.

actually im a bit worried cuz im planning to keep this laptop at least for 2-3 years and i don't want this heating problem to cuz any faults to my laptop.
do you think i should call dell for this heating and freezing problem.
i will post the disk scanning result soon.

The CPU is technically within it's specifications up to 105C; unless you got a dud.

It is a new computer, so if you keep on having these issues, you might as well take it up will Dell Support and see what they can do for you.

While temps are still within range they do seem quite hot. What is idle temp? To get mine to go to 65c i really need to do more than just some browsing. Maybe the cooling pads/heatsink isnt making a good connection?
Anyway i would definetly let Dell know about it. Could you maybe try HWmonitor to check temps? A lot of these apps can be as much as 8c off with readings

Could be something else other than temp. Call Dell and get it repaired. Don't even try to diagnose it and waste time.

i'm having similar issues.. the laptop gets too hot.
when the computer is connected to AC, the SLI Hybrid GPU switches on and the fan starts to be really noisy. at that point, forget putting your hands under the laptop (where the vent is), it is extremely hot and could burn your hands easily.

i'm thinking of returning this laptop and asking for a refund. i prefer my M1330 a gazillion times. i couldn't get the HDMI cable to output 5.1 audio channels evethough my M1330 could do it. googling it shows that its a common problem with the "nvidia high definition audio" drivers. and no solution is to be found anywhere.

Heat on mine is OK. It gets really hot to the touch after playing games but it doesn't actually overheat. It's got a thermal pad like the M1330 so you could probably do a copper mod the same way if necessary. And yeah, the fan runs all the time in Boost mode, but it's not massively loud.

Aeasaeas, you don't have an external drive with eSATA do you? I posted another thread about it - I get the exact same freezing issue whenever I plug a drive into the eSATA and turn it on. It's not a software issue, since it'll freeze at the BIOS detect stage as well. It's hardware or BIOS firmware.

actually no im not connecting esata drive to the esata port its just gets freeze after 3 to 4 hours of normal usage like browsing , chat ... etc, i contact dell already and the support guy ask me to update the Bios which i did without any difference in the heat problem ,, and also ask me to do dell diagnosis in extended mode AND send him the error massage code ,, i didn't get any error actually ,, i was thinking to ask for a replacement but now seriously thinking about getting a refund.

There must be a solution. Dell are saying that this laptop supports 5.1 and i've hard to believe that they haven't tested this...

i've been reading that when open, the lid blocks an air vent located behind the base of the laptop.

would keeping the lid closed while using your laptop help alleviate the heat problems?
