The 2630QM is pretty good CPU. It is however the entry model of the i7 series, and has some limitations:
    - No VT-d, so if you need the notebook for using a loads of virtual machines, it will be somewhat less capable
    - A bit slower integrated GPU, 1100Mhz instead of 1300Mhz...its essentially not important in this notebook as the integrated GPU is only for power saving

Razor2 gave the main points. If you don't care about running virtual machines, it will be close in comparison to the i7 2720QM. If however, you can get the i7 2720QM for $30 extra, I would go for it just for future proofing and resale value.

And it's a nice machine. I really like it now, will even more when my ssd comes in!

The higher price-point packages for XPS15 start with 2620M (dual core) and upgrade to 2720QM (quad core) for 30 bucks more.

For me it was $125 more for the 2720qm over the 2630qm which at the time was more than 12% of the total price of the machine.

Not in Europe...here the 2630QM is standard and you pay a whopping 180€ for the 2720QM...they even want extra for the 2620M!!
