i'm looking at both of these systems right now.
    the xps 16 comes with ATI Mobility RADEON® HD 4670 – 1GB
the studio 15 comes with ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5470, 1GB

here are the reviews from notebookcheck.com
Notebookcheck: AMD ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670
Notebookcheck: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470

it looks like the xps16 has a better video card, but my friend said the studio 15 has a better one because it's a newer model. what do you guys think would produce better graphics? i plan on configuring a 1080 res screen if that matters

The 4670 is WAY faster than the 5470. It's one generation older, so it doesn't have DirectX 11 like the 5470, and has higher power consumption, but it's still significantly better for gaming. In terms of GFLOPS (billions of floating-point operations per second), the 4670 is 3.6x faster than the 5470.

I would not consider the 5470 sufficient for modern games. The 5650 or 4650 (or Nvidia 250 / 335) should be the minimum to look at.

Note that the XPS 16 also comes with the 5730, which is 4.3x faster than the 5470 (1.2x faster then the 4670), and has DX11.

thanks for the feedback, upgrading to the 5730 would make it a little too expensive for me though, unless i can find a coupon somewhere online

i'm probably gonna end up getting the 4670 as power consumption isn't an issue for me.. i'm gonna have it plugged in most of the time anyways

i do wish i could use those custom laptop covers on the xps though, they only offer it to the studio 15 :(

Keep in mind Dell Canada has a $339 instant rebate on the SXPS16 in its "Premium" configuration until the 30th. If you opt for the lower-end configurations you still have $239 off I think.

It's automatically applied during configuration. Dell often has "promotions" like this, making people feel like they didn't pay full price.
