on average how long does it take for laptops to ship.. does it always ship at or near the estimated ship date, or can it be done earlier based on demand, availability of parts, etc?

The ESD is usually overestimated. It helps protect Dell for any part delays, back orders, etc. There is a fairly good chance that your lappy may ship on/before the ESD. : )

If your ordered from the Outlet, the shipping is always much faster. Usually w/in a few days to a week. It just depends on your order, and how the process as going.

My 1530 originally took about 3.5 weeks. But that was because there were some delays in Production. My Netbook took over a month, but that was a first Generation Mini 9 and there were many Order Delay problems.

My 1647 took about 3.5 weeks, because it was a replacement lappy. Those tend to take a bit longer.

If I were to guess-timate....2-3 weeks. ;)

In response to the OP, I ordered a system similar to yours on 8/26 and paid for the cheapest shipping option. My original ESD was 9/14. Got notified on 8/30 that my order had shipped and received it early in the morning on 9/1.

It varies. I have nearly the same system that you ordered, and it came 1 day after the EDD. Not late enough to complain about it, but still late.

I love it. I've been using it for work, school work, multimedia, internet, and games. I've had 0 problems with it so far. It's powerful enough to play old games at max settings new games at medium-high settings at 900p. I can get it to throttle, but only when trying to get it to throttle by running Prime95 + FurMark. I've never had it throttle during normal usage or gaming. Idle temps are in the high 40s, and heavy load / gaming temps are in the high 70s. I can get them up to mid-80s when running Prime95+Furmark, but never during 'normal' usage.

The frame is solid, and the metal backplate is nice. The display, even the 900p WLED, is great for a laptop display. I like the backlit keyboard and its simple look and layout. I do a lot of typing, and the keyboard is great (for a laptop at least). The slot-load DVD is a nice touch.

There are some cons. The shiny black surfaces are horrible fingerprint magnets. The fan exhaust blows directly on the screen. The plexiglass sheet covering the display is kinda pointless. The power jack seems a bit loose. The speakers are ok for a laptop, but could use some improvement considering it is a 'multimedia' laptop. The frame is a bit large for a 15.6 inch screen, could be shrunk about .5" in all directions.

Overall, I'd give it 8.5/10. Nothing's perfect, but this is one of the nicest laptops I've ever used.

online my order shows "In Production" - via phone it says "Being Processed" - Which one is correct? I made a full-one time payment which has already been deducted from my account. So confused ;/

"In Production" just means it's still in the factory. there's more details about it here.

"Being Processed" is probably the same thing?

Anyways, I ordered my 1645 on Aug 11, and the unit arrived at my place Aug 31. This includes them screwing up my configuration twice, though. In my case, they shipped before the Estimated ship date of Sept 12.

So I would place the normal wait period between 2 to 4 weeks, shipping and production times included.
