As it says in the title, the speakers in my laptop just stopped working for no reason what so ever, to make matters worse when i plug in headphones they were fine, it's only the speakers that don't work. what might be the problem?

P.S: I just got this laptop last week, so its brand new.

Try to select the correct playback device:
The 2nd one: your speakers should work.
The 3th one: only the headphone plug will work.

i have 3 jack plugs on the left side, 1 microphone and 2 headphones. but as i noticed, that 2 headphone plug work together, i can plug a headphone to each of them and i'll have sound on both but when i choose RTC heaphones, none of them gives any sound.. at least i remember this, but i could remember wrong, since i removed that driver and went back to original drivers (i had some dxva-video playback issues after installing dell's drivers)

I have the same problem with my XPS 1645. The cause (for me) is that the computer thinks there are headphones plugged in to one of the jacks (but there isn't). You can check if this is the cause for you as well by hitting F12 as the computer boots up. This will start a set of Dell diagnostic tests. Wait for those tests to complete (it takes a few minutes).

Once those finish, there is a way to perform some custom testing (I don't have the exact steps right now, post again if you can't figure it out). One of the custom tests is to have the computer report whether it thinks there is anything connected to the three input jacks.

There are a few other tests that will play sounds. My computer plays those sounds fine because these are Dell diagnostic sounds that don't care if anything is plugged into the jacks or not.

I thought I'd add a bit more info since my speakers somehow started working again.

For a few days, my XPS 1645 believed there were headphones plugged in when there wasn't, so I wasn't getting any sound through the speakers. Both the Dell diagnostics and the IDT audio control panel reported that something was plugged into one of the jacks.

I wish I could say what solved my problem, but I don't know. One thing to try is to reinstall the sound drivers, then turn off the laptop, unplug it and pull out the battery for a while. That is similar to what I did before my sound started working again, but to be honest I don't know if this is what helped me.

But as long as my PC thought there were headphones plugged in, there was no way to get sound through the speakers.
