Which program is giving you the problem? Do they have an X64 update for it?

As to XP, unless you install 64bit XP Pro you are going to have RAM addressing issues, as 32 bit cannot address 6 GB of RAM.

I am happy with vista 64 however one of the important applications at work will only work with XP. the program people have said they will not be ready for vista till at least july. therefore does anyone know whether i can install XP professional onto my studio XPS 1640. i understand the RAM issues. i will install it on a partition if it is possible to install XP and when my program eventually is compatible with vista then i will remove the XP operating system.

please let me know if this is possible however.

You can run Windows XP as a virtual machine on your Vista host machine.
