One annoyance on my new XPS 15 is how it seems like, if no sound is being played, and for example you receive an IM on AIM, the sound starts out low. It's almost like the speakers turn off and come back on when a sound is played - and the sound starts out low before finishing at the normal volume. I made sure the Power Management feature is turned off in Realtek HD Audio Manager.

    Any other ideas?

As I recall, this is caused by a power saving feature.
You can disable this from the Control Panel/Realtek HD Audio Manager under the Advanced fan. I disabled the power management altogether and the problem went away.

Update: I was unable to recreate the "fade in" problem, so it might have been fixed in the latest driver update from Dell.
