sooo i got the 130w adapter, but Dell wants me to ship back my 90w adapter to them. I was hoping to actually use the 90w when i go to class for notes and stuff while leaving the 130w at home.

Should i call Dell and ask them if I can keep the 90w adapter or do i have to make up an elaborate story to convince them?

Thanks a lot for your help guys :D

Might be tough. Dell made it very clear (when I called) that I had to send the 90w back. If they didn't say this, you can tell them you didn't know I guess... but to Dell this is an expensive part (around $100 US).

Edit: it showed up in my order history, so I knew I would be billed if I didn't send it back. Price was $110 and change including tax.

That is stealing. Wow, surprised you could say that with a smiling face. I srsly question your sense of morality.

    To the OP:

If you don't send it back, then likely...

    1) You could be billed 2) Your account would be held for any future replacement / repair.

If you really want to keep it, ask if they will let you purchase it. If not, maybe look into a 3rd party PSU. They probably have an open exchange on your account and if it is not closed with the return of either of the two parts after a while, you risk getting your account placed on hold and not being able to get future service until it is cleared.

Whenever I have parts only service, there's an invoice issued under my account, and until Dell gets the part back, they don't issue credit memo on the account.

I'm assuming they will charge you if you don't return it.

I kept mine after I got them to say it was OK. I went to Studio XPS 1645 Power Supply Upgrade to get the 130 watt adapter and near the bottom it says:

"Please note, there is nothing wrong with the current 90w adapter shipped with your system. The issue being addressed is strictly related to maximizing the performance of your system. You may continue to use the 90w AC adapter and power cord originally provided with your notebook."

This can be interpreted in a couple of different ways. One might suppose it means that it is OK to continue to use the 90w adapter while waiting for the new one, but one might also interpret as meaning that you can keep the 90w one and continue to use it...

I used dell chat to get my 130w adapter since the website wasn't working for my serial #, and when the guy said I'd have to send the 90w adapter back in the box the 130w one came in, I emailed him the link to the power supply upgrade page and told him it clearly said we could keep the 90w one. I repeated the quote "You may continue to use the 90w AC adapter and power cord originally provided with your notebook." He said "OK, it will be no problem for you to keep the 90w adapter." Since Dell emails you a transcript of the chat when it's over, I knew I'd have proof they said I could keep it, so I kept it, and have had no problems whatsoever.

Can't believe some of you are so dishonest. U know darn well that statement means that you can still use your 90w adapter until u recieve your 130w. For u too keep it just means you are stealing it from dell. When you car goes in for a recall do u get to keep the part that was replaced? NO u don't. And if the 90w adapter is making your system throttle why would u want to keep it anyways???? Me thinks that some of you guys make these problems more serious then they really are and are always trying to get something for nothing.

Lol everyone hates somebody that screws over a worldwide company over something like £20!
Dell buys these parts in the hundreds of thousands and are quite frankly a bit cheeky to ask for them back!

I got a couple genuine 130w adapters (with the dell rubber strap) on eBay for around $25 each a couple of months ago.

If you really need one, I'd search there. Dell will rip you off if you get an adapter through them.

OP, if you were told to Ship the 90W Adapter back, then you know they want it back. You know what to do.

There is a difference between being told: You may keep the 90W Adapter, and "ship the 90W adapter back when you receive the 130W Adapter".

Make up an "Elaborate" story to keep? That is wrong... :(

Uh, no they won't. If OP was told they were sending as a Replacement for the 90W Adapter, and they want the 90W Adapter back, the answer is right there. Usually, you have 10 Days to return. This was not a "freebie".

Then, OP needs to send it back. Eventually, it will catch up. They will either invoice him for the Adapter. And, in the meantime, they may even (if they chose), send him nice reminder letter, or more.

In the end, it is up to the OP to do the right thing.

    Cin...

Sorry if my sarcasm isn't obvious on here! The big grin ' :D' was me joking! :)

OP, just do as they say! Be a good customer! ;)
You can get them cheap enough off amazon/ebay etc!

There is no harm in contacting dell and asking them(nicely) to keep the power adapter, but asking for an "elaborate story to convince them" is against the forum rules.

    Thread closed.
