    Folks,

this is the first time i am considering to buy Dell XPS 15. Dell XPS 15 looks very sturdy with intel core i7. I am using a laptop mainly for software development. could you share the quality of Dell XPS compare to vostro ?

Can't comment on the Vostro, but I can on the XPS 15. The laptop itself is solidly built. I have completely dissasembled, repasted, and assembled the laptop back together, and the structure design is solid. You can usually tell the build quality when you pick one up one-handed with the lid open. If you feel any distortion in the base or any noises/creaks, it wasn't built solidly. The XPS does not distort and is competely silent when picking it up from any angle with the lid open.

I don't know squat about the Vostro line and I've only had my XPS for a few months, but so far it seems to be a very solid build for a consumer lappy. I don't baby mine at all and it still looks and performs like new.

Yes I would say the XPS 15 is pretty sturdy. a few days ago, my laptop fell off my bed onto the ground. made a pretty loud crashing noise. drop was probably 3 ft and the floor was carpeted but its the really thin kind of carpet. other than the battery popping out, i couldnt find anything wrong or damaged. :)

For software dev, you're going to want to stay away from the Vostro because of the screen. 1366x768 in 15.6" is too low of a resolution for programming. Text will be huge and you won't be able to fit much onscreen for programming (lines of code, property/error windows, etc.) or for general multitasking.

And if you get the XPS, you're going to need to make sure you get the screen upgrade. If you don't get the screen upgrade, then you're just wasting your money on the XPS 15. The stock screen is junk, both quality-wise and resolution-wise (you can't fit much onscreen because things are huge), but the 1920x1080 B+RGLED display is one of the best laptop screens available. Get the 1920x1080 display before you think about upgrading anything else. Do not buy the Dell XPS 15 with the WLED 1366x768 720p screen, you must have the 1920x1080 B+RGLED 1080p screen in your config before you even think about buying it.

I am about to place an order for Dell XPS 15". i am currently using Toshiba satellite for two years, since a few months ago. i am experiencing overheating after i opened Google chrome with 6 tabs. HWmonitor showed processor temperature was 80 degree Celcius :(.

my question about does Dell XPS 15" has overheat issue? Fyi, i am using laptop mainly for software development (Visual studio, mysql, SQL server) and browsing.

Could you share how Dell XPS 15" handles overheating ? somehow my current toshiba satellite shut down itself due to overheating.

    many Thanks

See my reply in your other thread. Please don't post the same issue multiple times by the way.

Basically, the XPS 15 cools fine. Most all laptops that start overheating well after they were new have not had their vents and heatsinks cleaned out, or not cleaned out properly. This is the responsibility of the consumer to look at.
