For gaming performance, the 5830 should edge out the 540M, but for PS it really wouldn't make a difference. If you are using this laptop for work, I would suggest a business laptop such as the Dell Precision M4600 or the Lenovo ThinkPad W520 as their support and service is far greater than any consumer grade laptop. With the business laptops you get Quadro/FirePro cards which are meant for CAD.

The ati 5830 wins some benchmarks and loses some against the nvidia 540 check this site for benchmark info. The bottleneck is always the gpu with sandybridge right now atleast.I have both the m14x and the xps15x2,Even on my alienware the 555 is not the best for that machine its ddr3 that in itself is stupid imho, alienware shouldve went with a 460 or made a better specd 555 atleast of all we shouldve gotten a gpu with gddr5.I suggest the xps 15 for what your describing the xps is more than enough machine for your use.The ati and nvidia cards your asking are near identical in real world performance.

XPS 15 isn't really a gaming laptop...though for moderate gaming it will definitely do the trick.

If you want better a graphics option for less than $1000, try a HP dv6t (quad edition)...upgrade the card to ATI 6770M 1GB for $25 more, which is much better than the GT 540M or GT 525M in the XPS 15. Upgrade to the 1080p display for $150 more...not as good as the XPS 15 1080p apparently.

    HP dv6t Laptop: Core i7-2630QM Quad Core 2.0GHz, 6GB DDR3, 640GB 7200rpm HDD, 15.6" 1366x768 LED, 1GB Radeon HD 6490M, HDMI, WiFi N, 6-cell Battery, Win 7 Prem $775

I think if he's going to school for 3D graphics work he'd want the stellar display on the XPS 15. From all that I've heard, it can't be beat. I know I love mine.

I just spec'd out that HP dv6t, and it looks very nice. $400 more than I paid for a similar L502, but it does have a better graphics card, but I didn't notice a backlit keyboard.

I've generally heard the same about how awesome the 1080p screen is...I only have the 720p display because I was on a budget and I already have my desktop.

I'd definitely get a 1080 Full HD display on whatever laptop you do end up getting.

The HP's 1080p display is decent too (though not as good as the XPS 15's)

The DV6t's 720p screen wouldn't be suitable, and the XPS 15's screen not only has low resolution but also worse quality than the HP's 720p.
