If you've been around the forum, yahoo news, or engadget recently you'll have definitely read about how nVidia announced that their graphics cards have defects, presumably in the 8 series. I, like many others out there, opted to get my m1330 with a Geforce 8400m GS. And many of those m1330 have found that their graphics cards have heat problems recently. However, would my laptop be alright if I kept the temperature at 82 C or below? i.e. playing Warcraft 3 instead of Half-Life 2?

    Thanks to all who reply.

82C is too high, I think. Cause I have dual 8800M GTX with SLI enabled on my M1730 and it only reached 81C while gaming. So for 8400M to hit 82C, that doesn't sound very reasonable. I think below 75C sounds more reasonable.

Man your m1330 is definitely burning itself if it reaches 82C with an 8400 GS. Though i don't think thats all nvidia's fault, dell's colling system isn't all that impressive.

You should go and download the driver update for the nvidia cards that are causing the fans to kick in earlier.

82C is somewhat fine for silicon.

@ckh: Sure, your card is just a hair cooler. But the OP's card is in a different notebook, with a different form factor. So it isn't very fair to judge a reasonable temp based off of your laptop.

82C is pushing your luck, that is for sure. Over 85C and I would worry, and over 95C means you need to stop using the laptop.

Already done that, but it doesn't really help the gpu much, just the ambient temperature, really.

Really? 82 C is too high? I've played games on my dad's m1210 with the 7400 before, and it reached around 82 C as well... though admittedly it never went to 95 C in Half-Life 2.

I used to have an M1210 that I played games on regularly. It never topped 80C. With the Zalman NC1000, I think I maxed out at 75C even with sligh OC'ing on that 7400.

I'm waiting for my V1310 and I hope the temps aren't as high as claimed by so many on here.

You're very lucky to get 82C, most people get 95C+ with the M1330 GPU.

82C is nothing. Around 65 while idle here, and 103-104C while gaming.

I got my M1330 last week.
I've sent a mail to Dell about it some days ago, but haven't heard anything from them yet.

I'm using the latest driver for 8400M from Dell's website and A12 bios.

good. why dont you give them a call or do the online chat thing...
try upgrading to the latest drivers and bios and see if temps go down...

I'm not familiar with that program, but you can try GPU-Z, RivaTuner, or nTune too. I know they work well.

Yeah, I'd think if the gpu became hot enough to boil water, it's just plain too hot! o_O

That's how mine got. But for such a low-end game, I thought the temperatures were still a bit too high, so I spent the greater part of yesterday finding ways to control heat (this is my laptop for the next 4 years, so I want it to last :)) My goald was to keep at 85 C or below at all times, since that still seems to be acceptable to most people.
I'm actually downclocking my 8400m GS now. Good thing is, Half-Life 2 still runs great at 325 mhz clock and 300 memory, as opposed to factory setting's 400 mhz and 600 memory, and it stays below 85 C. And now the gpu doesn't even break 80 C when running Warcraft III at highest settings. I'd suggest you downclock too if you're planning to play older games, not the most ideal solution, but it works for older games.

I really really want to try that copper mod, but my parents paid for my laptop and are unwilling to let me void the warranty until next year (when it ends) :D.

I didn't even know there was an A12 bios... I thought the latest was A11. I tried A11, and went back to A10 because I wanted to save battery life.
Also, I tried Dell's drivers for the 8400, but it still runs hotter with that driver than it does with the 167.45 driver from laptopvideo2go.com. I suggest you try that one too.

Phew, that was a long post. Shutting up now.

    I'll try the 167.45. :) (Using 175.97 atm.)

Here's the thread about A12 bios. The fan is enabled more quickly that A11 and earlier versions I think, which results in a little bit lower temperatures (and lower battery time?)

Is there anyone here who has a 65nm 9 series card and tell us what temps. they get with those cards (or ATI's 55nm cards). I'm just curious.

We know, it's a flaw with every single 8400M GS equipped M1330 and NONE of them run under 95C with the stock cooling.

Not with stock cooling and accurate temperature readings. Some drivers and applications (such as I8kfanGUI) give wildly inaccurate readings. HWMonitor seems to give the most accurate readings.
