    sounds bad.

    Is it under warranty?

The control for touchpads and keyboards especially is not in the part, meaning if you replaced the keyboard and touchpad you may still have problems. So its likely the motherboard.
Try running the diagnostic at different times like when you said you got it to work correctly.

You could also try disconnecting the keyboard. Pry of the hinge cover (the part that has "XPS" in red letters), unscrew the 4 screws holding it down, and slide it up about 1/2" right after pressing the power button.

Power keys are located on the top bezel which is on an independent rail from the keyboard, althought they share the same connectors.
I think that your problem is that the motherboard is going to die soon. The keyboard and touchpad controller hooks up with the palmrest area by a thin cable, located on the bottom left corner of the motherboard.
Theres the controller too. I suspect that the controller is almost dead, remember that some motherboards where faulty, some others get faulty in the time, so maybe its your turn, which is sad.
I advice to send it back to dell if you have any warranty left. If not, you can buy a new motherboard off ebay, they are cheap as well, so maybe with a little effort you can fix it by yourself.
Anyway what happens if you plug in an usb mouse or keyboard, does it work ok? It should since they use the usb controller instead of the builtin keyboard controller.
Good luck mate, im sorry to hear you're having problems with it.
