    hey guys, got a m1730 - 8800m gtx sli - x9000 cpu - 4gig ram - etc etc

so story is, i jump on a new game called Demigod, cpu running at 2.8ghz , after about 5-10mins of playing, i notice both my cores are running at 100% and the game lags like crazy, frame rate goes down really bad.

so i figure, hm, cpu bottleneck for a game.. strange.. lets have some overclock fun - i go ahead and set my x9000 to 3.4ghz, now the game runs great, my cpu cores dont reach 100% and the frame rate is great, all is good and great. only problem with running at 3.4ghz is that after about 30mins-1hr of playing, my m1730 powers down due to what i can assume to be overheating.

whilst i found this annoying, i decided id play along with the overheating idea. so, i go grab a little laptop USB fan pad thing, put it under the laptop, and the m1730 runs awesomely cool for ages, about 1-2 hrs , then.... after about 2 hrs, it powers off randomly again (must be overheating) ... problem is that i swear to ala, that the friggen thing was running nice and cool for ages and it wasnt terribly hot when it auto-powered off.

so theres my story, to give everyone some extra info, i tried out putting ridiculously low graphics settings on demigod whilst playing it... and also horribly low res, even on those settings, the cpu still bottlenecked during the game.

my conclusion is that my m1730 has used its 1 year relationship with me to create its own AI and purposely annoy me due to the fact that it must be jealous that im more portable than it is..... other than that, if anyone has had any similar experiences or suggestions for what i should do.... id really appreciate hearing them

Try to monitor your temperatures. Use HW Monitor for this. You can use Everest or Core Temp for the CPU also.

Yeah you might want to tell us your temps, using HWMonitor or Everest, run it at the background while playing the game.

You may want to try undervolting your X9000 at both clocks, 3.4GHz and the stock 2.8GHz, clean and reapply MX2/AS5 onto its cores for assisted cooling. I got off 30*C when I did those. So because of this tweak, when I render a 3ds Max scene for 5-6 hours continually at 100% CPU usage @ 3.4GHz, it's around 65*C instead of 90*C :p

hmm thanks for the CPU cooling tip, very interesting, i think ill have to get around to doing that very soon. How would i go about undervolting my x9000 by the way? dont recall seeing any options in the bios.

Also, just a confirmation that i found out its definitely due to temperature (overheating) as i did a bunch of tests with different configurations, and the only time i could play a full game of demigod was when the laptop was being cooled down with extra fans on 2.8ghz - and it never turned itself off due to heat because it was running at a beautiful 2.8ghz! unfortunately im far too lazy to download temp monitoring programs as i dont see the point, seeing that i know 100% its definitely a temperature issue..... very very interested in what you said regarding the MX2/AS5 though, looks like you got some awesome results

*as an edit* just like to say thanks for the replies guys =) much appreciated
