m1730 2 problems please help

i have 2 problems with my m1730, one the keyboard lights stopped working, is it driven by a driver or something or what? my 2nd problem is device manager is telling me i have an unknown pci device and is always asking me for driver software. windows has directed me to nvidia for the driver. i know it is the physx processor but the physx control panel says no physx processor installed. any help will be appreciated thanx

try installing that.

and with the keyboard, you will need some utility to be reinstalled, because the lights are controlled by Fn on the keyboard.

You can also try re-seating the keyboard LED ribbon cable. It's a very small ribbon cable under the left side of the keyboard. I've read about them not being inserted properly from the factory and over time slowly losing contact.

It's a very easy thing to check/do.

 

If you have Quickset installed, verify the keyboard lighting is not set to off. If your BIOS is set to enable keyboard lighting and quickset is set to turn it off it will go off once quickset is loaded.

 

ok i have a new problem, with my graphics cards set to run in sli i cant preview my photos just a black box, with sli not running there is no problem? any thoughts?

i did it, but the cable is loose in the socket if i wiggle the cable the lights come on...

 

Insert the ribbon cable into the keyboard connector, and press down on the retainer clip to secure the cable in place.

Make sure the ribbon cable is firmly seated prior to locking it down with the retainer clip.

 

As BatBoy said, make sure you have the retainer clip pulled up before inserting the cable, then press it down after inserting it.

Also, take a look at the contacts on the ribbon cable. Make sure they are clean and free of anything that could cause a bad connection (dirt, dust, etc..)

The ribbon cable plugs into a small white plug, with a small BLACK clip. You release the clip by pulling straight up on the rear black part...

This is the worst picture ever, but all I have on me is my phone, so it'll have to do....



Pull straight up on black clip, insert ribbon cable end, push straight down on clip.

Hopefully that helps....

 

It should be there - take another look. It sits flush with the connector so it may not really look like its there. Just grasp the sides of the connector with your thumb and index finger and gently pull up. If the clip is indeed missing, Dell will have to replace your MOBO.

Maybe it came loose and is floating around the inside of your chassis - as long as you are under warranty you should be good to go. Give em a call and let em know that the clip is missing.

 

i am out of warranty i was thinking maybe i could find the connector if i knew what kind of connector it was and take the clip off and try to fix it. other than that i am lost

 

I doubt you will be able to find the clip aftermarket. It may not even be removable. I would give this one a firm tug to see if it is, but I'd rather not chance it

It may come down to either rigging it yourself (some kind of fastener - perhaps some form of electrical tape that wont leave a residue). as long as the cable is firmly pushed down and the keyboard is reseated without pulling the cable out again, you should be ok.

Regarding your specs, sorry - what I meant was a brief rundown (like you see in the signature line of most posts). For your picture issue with SLI enabled, I was mainly looking for:

1. What OS are you running (Vista or XP - 32 or 64-bit)
2. What NVIDIA Driver do you currently have installed
3. Which GPU do you have
