I have an m1710 with heat problems and the laptop shuts down. When I called dell for this problem I was expecting to get alienware m17x or m18x. But instead they have m1710 parts to replace my broken ones, like a motherboard, heatsink, hinge cover, video card, and fans. How do people with m1710 get an alienware m17x r2, m1730 replace with m18x by waterr? I read alot of people get a replacement alienware in these forums but how does this happen when dell has all the replacement parts for the m1710s and m1730s?

IIRC you have to have had it serviced at least 2 to 3 times before they'll even consider giving you a replacement...

    Read this http://forum.notebookreview.com/dell-xps-studio-xps/444044-replacement-fix.html

Batboy says they will replace it with m17x r2 because they have no more parts and cin supported this. I bought this laptop in 2007 and now its 2011 and they still have parts for this laptop. The dell tech recently replaces these broken parts. Also, imation probably didn't have it service 2 or 3 times.

Wait...they still have XPS 1710 still in warranty...?

In order to qualify for replacement, your unit has to go in multiple times for service. Though the unit is now end of life, Dell is one of the few manufacturers who will still carry old parts, new or refurbished.

I had the ac adapter replace twice does that counts as 1. Recently replaced motherboard and video card thats 2. Now I my optical drive is doesnt respond anymore thats 3. Which means I get a relacement alienware laptop now?

Are you still in warranty? You would have to call up Dell and try to get a replacement but it is no guarantee.

Please read dell's terms and conditions. There is absolutely no mention of getting a brand new laptop if your's happens to have some trouble. Dell can fix or replace, at their discretion, your laptop until the warranty expires. If I were them, I'd keep fixing it with refurbished parts until the warranty expires. If you want a brand new laptop, they have them for sale.

Replacement's not a guarantee. Even my defective studio 1458 had to go through 9-10 part replacements, only then I was able to get the ball rolling.

And I ended with a far superior machine, the XPS 14 (specs in my sig).

According to Complete cover warranty, they try to repair first. If that doesn't work, then they replace the whole unit. The minimum part replacements before you get a whole exchange is 3-4 times.

I suspect they will have to do 3 tries of fixing your heat problem before you'll get any chance at replacements. None of the problems you've had so far have been internal in nature really. And it's quite possible that a new motherboard or cpu might fix your heat problem.
