    m1710 charging problem

    lately when i plug in my charger quickset pops up and tells me i need to put a 130w charger in and that my system will be slow and wont charge.

    but sometimes if you pull it out a few times and push it back in it will eventually work, and charge..

    but now i can not get it to charge.the charger is 3months old, as is the laptop.

    has anybody got any ideas what is causing this.

    Figures. I had this exact problem with my last Dell laptop , the Regular XPS Gen 2. I just upgraded to a brand new M1710 and have already seen the same 130w error you have once. Great.... I came here to while searching on how to enable my bluetooth. Apparantly there is a known issue with that an Vista.

    I expect I'll see it again. Have you found a solution? I remember seeing somewhere to check the pin on the inside of the adapterand make sure its not bent but mine is not.

    With my last laptop, I went through three new ac adapters. My cat would always chew on the cord and some wire was exposed so I blamed that. A new adapter seem to fix the problem for a few months.

    Now I'm confused. I see your post and had the same error and everything is brand spanking new and without my cat chewing on it yet.

    At least now I have a warranty and can listen to Dell tell me it's not a known problem. Hopefully they will fix it anyway. That's what they told me about the Geforce 8600 graphics cards that overheats and fries. A well known problem that cost me a huge headache and days and days to find out for myself. They told me they weren't aware that this was a huge problem so there wasnt a recall. Thats bull! They are even being sold on ebay with fried 8600 cards. Anyway, my point is, I wish they would just be honest. You know they are gettting calls about both of these problems.

    And I got a "good deal" on this 4,000 dollar loaded laptop.

    Does this problem happen at every electrical outlet you guys have tried? Or just one in particular/or one location in particular? It could be a household wiring problem.

    With the last laptop, it was anywhere I plugged in. It wouldn't even boot with the AC. Only the battery. A black screen with white text had the error. A new AC supply fixed the problem for around three months.

    My with my new one, I only saw this once. It was a Windows Vista pop-up, right after booting. Hopefully, it was the socket strip I was plugged into or something? I don't know. I just felt a sort of sick feeling of, "oh no, not that again. Not on my new one."

    That's all I know so far. Hopefully it was a fluke, but that sure is a coincidence. I did read since then that if you look into the end of the adapter, the inner, center wire could be bent that plugs into the laptop. Mine looks fine on this new one.

    Anyway, if I see the 130w message again, I'll be posting! I'm hoping the thread owner will be around to tell us what happened.
