I was wondering how often everyones fan kicks in while your running on your batteries. My fan kicks in every 5 mins runs for 10 secs then stops (on my lap not blocking the vent). I was wondering if this was too often.

I know that it also varies from bios versions but i have a12 and my cpu is running at a cool 37' c while my gpu is running at 60 ish.

any input would be greatly appreciated.

Mine does the same thing. I dont run on battery though. Its in my dorm room so it just sits on my desk. But at night i can hear the fan kick on every 10 minutes or so and only stays on for a short amount of time. I wouldnt worry about it.

When my Gpu reaches 60C it kicks in to lower it to 50C, then it stops, and repeats this process, my old fan waited until my GPU was at 65C and then lowered it to 60C, that's why i changed it :D

Sounds normal. The cpu heats up to the fan trigger point, fan turns on, cools it down way below the threshold and takes 5 mins to bring it back up.

ive been watching hwmonitor. and its not the cpu which is heating up its the gpu. it goes up to 66c then cools it to 60 but i do notice when it will cool it all the way down to 56 when my cpu passes the threshold.

yeah, i remember an old inspiron we had, when the fans where at top speed they would sound like internal combustion engines, back then when they still used vertical fans to take the air out of the laptop case, good times :D

fan is constantly on. it's always at a low rpm then bumps up to high rpm for several minutes upto 20 minutes then goes medium for 10 minutes then the cycle continues.

I have the 9 cell battery and have the back elevated off the desk so it can suck in more air under the laptop.

im pretty sure the fan is not constantly since i can hear it turn off.
but to koer i remember my old digital desktop (PII 233mhz cartridge kind) when the fan would kick in it would sound like an industrial fan ready to suck up little babies.

    thanks for the input guys

Mine kicks in at GPU ~69/70 and brings it down to ~59/60, then turns off

It takes a few minutes to warm back up to 69, depending on whether I have my notebook cooler fan turned on/off, and obviously depening on what I am doing.

So for day to day stuff (not gaming) I would say it kicks in for about 1 min every 5-10 min. If I put my notebook cooler fan on, basically it never reaches 69, so the fan stays off permanently (again, just talking about simple/idle tasks).

The title of the thread is asking how often my fan kicks in... I've explained what my laptop does and you are telling me that's not what it's doing. You're a genius I guess that knows more then I do yet you've never seen my computer.

sadly i dont. I was gonna buy one on ebay but didnt think that would be a good idea, because if i got a faulty one i would be stuck with a 100 dollar paper weight. I also heard that the ones they sell on ebay is not with par than the ones the dell sells.
But last week i had a problem with my battery (only lasting 20 mins) and dell was nice enough to overnight me a new battery (after 30 mins of troubleshooting).

If someone can pm me a link of where i can get a 9cell for a decent price id greatly appreciate it.

yep, lol that left me thinking of a mod a friend did to his laptop, he altered the voltage of the fan and replaced the motor with one he found on an RC helicopter.... and it worked!!! it was a friggin turbojet engine inside a laptop, and it literally froze the machine, and sounded like a little mosquito when gaming, but im finding it difficult to be able to mod these new extra THIN laptops, its just a lot harder :D
by the way, just got my 8600gt back, since the last one they replaced had a 8400gs ( the horror!!!!!)
and me poor fan is having a hard time keeping up with this powerful GPU :D ( before 50-60C now 57-64C hehe )

Yeah, I wouldn't do Ebay for a batt' unless I was 100% positive.
Dell does work good when it comes down to support. I just got a new batt too, and it was nearly 10 days outside of the 1 year warranty!

Someone had a link for where to buy batt's, let me try and find it for yah! :D

LoL...I can imagine that sound. I would prob's lose my hearing!  :) How is the GT working now?

It certainly does, thats where my lappy mainly is, on my lappy w/9 cell.

And yet, the fan doesn't come on that often!

    Cin ;) :)

I got a laptop battery on ebay once. It looked great, very professionally made, with high-quality plastics and a very high-feedback seller. The thing swelled up the first time I used it and the seams split. You could literally see inside a little crack on the side, you could see the green cells. Bad idea, that thing went straight into the bin, waste of money, that was an expensive lesson. You do NOT want to be putting that kind of crap into your expensive laptop.

Mine acts exactly the same, threshold appears to be 62 degrees on the GPU, then it kicks on, and boom the temp drops. I have the latest BIOS.

    Hey..

My fan acts normal, turns on at 67deg on the gpu and turns off at 52deg but when I put to sleep the computer and then wake it or hibernate and turn it on again sometimes the fan doesnt start at all and the GPU temps go up tu 85deg, so I gotta see the temps in the hwmonitor all the time and be aware.

I got this problem with the A12 bios. Never happened before with the old bios.

Also, sometimes when I turn off in windows it reboots and wont turn off until I push the power button for a few segs.

I think both problems are linked.

Anyone with the same problem? any solution?

    thx!

Hmm, strange. My fan used to kick in at 62 degrees on GPU and keept on going till the temp reached 53 (on A08 BIOS). Now as I chneged th BIOS to A12, it kocks in at 60 ,and stopps at 51. Not very big diffrence but the fan runs for longer and witj shortes pauses (after 1-2h form strat it strats every 3-4 minutes for about 2-3 minutes). The temps are pretty nice. On CPU rising from 35 to 50 without fan running And reaches ~70 while gaming. The max GPU temp i;ve ever seen was 83 after 5 hours of playing GTA 4. Tipically is from 76-78/80.

yeah , i should have thought of that before they replaced my heatsink with an identical one *facedesk* :p

but yeah they are coming to replace my palmrest tomorrow , il tell them i still got high temps...

yeah i love it too, but not when im depending on it to cool off my GPU, no way, id rather replace it with a penny, put some AS5 one it and let the penny do its job hehheeh :D
(even a $100 bill will do har har har har!!!)

really ? i thought A09 was the best to keep temps down....

My XPS is quite strange about the temps. On A08 the cooling system behaved almost identical as on A09 (trying to keep low temps), and after changing to A12 it's even cooler. The fan is not very annoying because at low rpm is not much louder from the HDD (Seagate 7200 rpm)

    Sorry for my English

My fans kick in once in a while, not as often as the fans kick in on my Sony Vaio however.

Both laptops are on 24/7 but the screens shut off after 5 mins on non-use. Everything seems to work fine, and the temps are well under control since bios A12.

Even when the fans kick in, they are pretty quiet. I have an Itanium based server in my office, and when those fans kick in I swear someone about to fly through my air space.

Thank god for laptops with smaller, quieter fans :)

could anyone else confirm this ? cause i would be delighted to upgrade to A12 if the temps are lower
