okay..so by now, everyone knows about the clicking noise. i guess it really isnt a clicking noise..rather the harddrive..doing...something >__>...really though, the click sounds like a short static-like sound and it happens like every couple of seconds. every laptop i've owned had that. so is this like just an unavoidable part about getting a laptop. does anyone not have this? beside ssd users...(i envy you all) honestly if there was any sort of ventilation, music, or just any bg noise i'd pbbly not hear it. but right now...i can easily hear it. someone also said its because the way the xps is designed where the hd is in basically the thinnest part of the notebook. so yeah any input would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

oh and btw, dell sent me a new hd but it had the same sound. so..yeah..screw that. other than that, i really like my dell. :p

btwx2, hd is 7200rpm 200gb free fall sensor. i know its not the free fall sensor cause the free fall sensor is really loud and it happens when i abruptly move it or something.

my 1730 runs almost silently, it's actually runs quieter than my old Amilo Xi 1546 did.. my Xi had a single GPU and a5400 rpm harddrive.. even in "silent mode" (a low-power mode which reduces heat to keep fan speeds down) it is louder than my XPS 1730, with 2 7200 rpm hdd's, 2 gpus and 2 processors to cool...

it might just be me but even the optical drive sounds quieter than the one in my amilo?! perhaps due to the "bulkier base", or perhaps the way it's built just minimises the vibrations..

eitherway, i've not had any problems with "clicking" from my hdd's, perhaps you've just gotten unlucky with yours?

My 1530 is almost silent too (160GB 7200rpm), however my 4 year old Inspiron 510m has a very noticable clicking noise from the harddrive about every 3-5 seconds.

IF YOU HAVE THE CLICKING NOISE THEN READ THIS:

First you need to install HDparm for windows, here is a direct link to the latest version:

    http://hdparm-win32.dyndns.org/hdparm/hdparm-6.9-20070516.win32-setup.exe

Install it to the default directory, very easy.

Now open up Notepad - locatead in the Start Menu's Accessories (probably different in Vista)

Now copy and paste the following into Notepad:

    Go file then Save as.

The file name should be 'clickfix.bat' and the extension ALL FILES.

Please save the file into a folder of your choice.

Ensure you save the file as a BAT file and not like clickfix.bat.txt

Now copy the clickfix.bat folder into your startup folder and restart your laptop, for a split second while windows gui loads you'll see the bat running but then it disapears and the clicking along with it.

    Enjoy.
