I've used a hp dv6500t, an Macbook Pro, and a few Logitech USB webcams and all of them have frame rates that are pretty decent. However when I am using my new m1530, I've noticed that the frame rate is horrible. I later installed Dell's software in addition to the driver which I already had. The program had a frame rate checker and it clocked in at 5 frames per second. I'm pretty sure most of the other cameras are much closer to 30fps!

Anyone else experience this or is my camera just defective?

Mine was like that too. I'm not sure if it was as bad as 5fps but it was very choppy compared to almost any other web cam I've seen. I don't use cameras much so I didn't care. Maybe it has something to do with the software.

I tried using multiple applications for different results, but it's the same issue everywhere. I use the camera for Skype and it looks quite horrible. The m1530 should have at least have a decent camera since it's a pretty high end laptop.

(I'm getting more disappointed as time passes. My screen was a Samsung, not LG. Internal Speakers aren't the greatest. Slot loading drive can't take in small discs. No Gigabit Ethernet. And the camera is a flop. To top that Vista doesn't help. )

Maybe it's a driver issue? Hopefully Dell will update the 1530 drivers over time to improve them.

If you turn off brightness and color correction, it should help out your framerate issues significantly.

I'm getting really bad frame rates also. Sometimes it's 30 fps, but most of the time it's 10 or even less. Occasionally, the blue light blinks off and then on with the camera freezing briefly. I hope an updated driver fixes this. I have a Logitech USB webcam for my desktop, which is spectacular by comparison.

Wow, I thought I was alone in this problem.

Actually, it's more like 6-7 fps at 640x480, then around 2-3 fps at 1280x1024. I don't even want to try it at full 2MP 1600x1200 lol.

    Any solutions?

Yes, SAME PROBLEM here. When I am using it with skype video, the camera randomly dies during the conversation and restarts it self. (blinking light) Therefore the video dies for a bit until it is ready to start providing a video source to the program again. A new DRIVER is really needed. The service manual claims it has a 30fps camera. So they NEED to make some changes soon!

This should be working on a machine which is considered "high end"!

We'll I assumed that dell would at least put that in properly. Did you have this problem then solve it by connecting the cables in properly? If so let us know. I'm just lazy to open it up and experiment at the moment.

Don't tell me you were hoping for 30 fps at 1600x1200,these performances can only be achieved by high end, very expensive filming equipment.

If you get less than 320x240 @ 30 in very good light conditions (full daylight) then you should start worrying.

I saw a webcam on dell 1520 performing in low light conditions, and indeed it was bad as opposed to my current Microsoft vx 1000! Hopefully it performs better in good light conditions!

No, actually, if you read my post carefully, I wasn't expecting anything from 1600x1200 at all, that's why I didn't even try it. :p If it was already 2fps at 1280x1024, why would I expect 30fps at 1600x1200? That's beyond belief.

If you'd ask me what I was hoping for, I was hoping for more than 10fps at 640x480 because even at Yahoo Messenger, it looks more like a slideshow than a video conversation.

I m really confused here... v r talking about webcam here with XPS M1530... I don't know how people are expecting it to record video at 640 x 480 @ 30fps... I mean it is the DVD resolution for any digi cam and it is wrong to expect it from a web cam. Ideal resolution for webcam video recording is 320 x 240 and for photographs at any resolution the FPS does not matter much... Have you ever seen a Digi cam to caputure at more than 640 x 480 @ 30fps??? I have not...

Dell. Cutting corners to up their margins. Ain't it great?

Thank goodness I never use the webcam (although the puking cat avatar is pretty funny)

Any solutions to this? I tried a creative driver, as well as the Dell driver, on both 32-bit and 64-bit Vista, and I can't get more than about 7fps at 640x480. I have a five year old web cam that cost $30 and does better...

Sometimes after messing with the settings I can manage 15 fps at 640x480.
