    has anyone tried/considered/imagined swapping a 13.3" LCD onto a 1210xps?

does anyone know if the 1330 LCD connector is the same?

i know it wouldnt look pretty but id be prepared to cut and paste the bezel as necessary since the laptop wouldnt leave my room

Umm i dont think it would work. Why not just get an external monitor?

well ive been looking at the pictures of the LCD cables and they look very similar, and if the cables are interchangeable then its only a question of fitting the bezel; the bezel on the 1210 is very thick, thick enough to accept a 13.3" with enough modification from what ive measured

my idea was to swap an LED screen onto a m1210

You want to fit a 13.3" screen in where a 12.1" screen fits.

    Square peg. Round hole.

Some laptops it's possible.... though those were designed that way.... if there is enough space around the edge, which is unlikely. Why not just, you know, get an M1330?

@hep: a m1330 is too big to be classified as an ultraportable, look at the size comparison in the link i posted; plus i think its ugly, look at the difference in distance in width between the lcd screen and the end of the computer, its about 2" farther, which means the monitor will sit 2" further away from you when its on your lap with the m1330; in summary..its too big, plus i highly dislike thick bezels; the one on my x61 is as thick as i find acceptable, and its about 50% thinner than the
    m1210 (estimation), also 12" screen

    a 12.1" LCD is 11.25" wide and 7.03" high
    a 13.3" LCD is 12.368" wide and 7.73" high

    1.1" wider, .7" taller

thats a comparison of the two models side by side; look at the bezel on the
    m1210, it could definitely take a 13.3

i never said it would look pretty but in purely physical terms yes absolutely it would fit

anarky - have you ever taken apart an LCD bezel? I suspect not. You are failing to realize that the hinges will probably not be compatible, and the extra space in the 1210 is being USED BY THE HINGES. 1.1" is quite a lot.

no the bottom of the LCD would sit in the same place, the extra room would come from the sides and the top; and yes ive taken LCDs apart; ive even looked at the dell manuals for the details on both, where the screw placement is etc; the sides of the LCD would sit close to the edge of the screen, i.e. it would probably have to be held from the top and bottom only not the sides

what I believe is that dell compromised; they had an opportunity to either make a full keyboard and a 13.3" display or a 12" display and a smaller keyboard, they opted to have a full keyboard and a small display, resulting in the hideous bezel that they tried to cover up with a webcam

    Okay, good luck.
But I'm telling you, you will have problems with the hinges.

well i only use my computer while lying on the bed and an ultraportable sits alot better on your lap (you can have it resting on one leg while the other one is bent for example, no comparison with a 15", i tried

you get used to the small screen very fast

....to each his own? You said you don't care how it looks once its done, but then you say you don't like the 1330 cause its ugly? Good luck!!!! Post pics of the destruction when done

    LCD Panel:
Different brand LCD panels use different video connectors on the driver boards. NEC, LG/Philips, Hyatis/vertex ect. all use there own unique connectors. Even within brands there are different connectors between models/sizes. The electronics to drive them could be different as well.

    Backlight:
Same as the video connectors, backlight connectors are usually unique to a brand/model as well. Also, CCFL tube backlights will use an inverter for DC/AC to step up the voltage where as LED backlights don't require high voltages (8-12 VDC) therefore the power will not be compatible.

Check in device manager for the brand of LCD panel that is in your laptop now and try to match that brand if you want it to work easily.

all the LCDs and LCD ribbon cables for sale on ebay look identical for the
m1210 and all the ones for the m1330 as well; do you know if the m1330 has a different motherboard connector for different LCD brands? that seems unlikely: ie its the same motherboard connector for all the CCFL brands that are used on the m1330 (anyone know what they are or if there is even more than 1?); i just need to know whether the motherboard connector is the same or not between the m1210 and the m1330

as for the LED screen, it looks like it wouldnt work because of the LEDs in the back cover, id need to use the m1330 back cover which i obviously cant, so its going to have to be a CCFL 13.3"

    Apologies on the resurrection...

Did you ever do the swap anarky321?

I'm curious myself if a 13.3" LCD would fit into the M1210. I have to swap the LCD in the 1210 anyhow b/c it is damaged and if all it takes is having the bezel cut to fit the larger screen than I'd be up for giving it a go. I've learned that a swap to LED isn't possible, so no big deal there.

Let me know your thoughts, or anyone else that feels like weighing in.

    Though it's an old thread...

no i actually just bought a dell vostro 1310 instead, decided it wasnt worth the time, ive since moved on to 17" laptops and never looked back, even my 17" screen is too small for me now
