Works fine here... Hell, I can even take out my internal HDD and boot from it using a eSATAp cable :D :

Enable eSATA in BIOS and make sure your eSATA cable is OK.

ok so it seems i have the wrong cable. think i need something like this to attach to a 3.5" external sata drive with power?

    DeLOCK cable eSATAp 12V 22pin 2,5" (6,5cm)/ 3,5" (9cm) HDD 0,5m 84402: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

at the moment i just have a normal esata cable, no double connection thing at the drive end...

EDIT: actually i don't think this works for 3.5" drives, only 2.5". 2.5" are 5v, which the esata/usb combo can handle, the 3.5" are 12v, which it can't handle...

You're right, most notebooks only supply 5v through eSATAp.
That is exactly the cable I have, Delock 84402. Although the cable supports both 5v and 12v:
    84402 spec
as you said, the XPS esatap 5v port limits your choice to 2.5" drives.

Also correct in that a normal ESATA cable won't power the drive, it only has the data pins connected. Normally ESATA is used with a second cable to power the drive, I like having the power in the line too now with the ESATA/USB combo (the USB is where the power is coming).
