Well my laptop just came in the mail, and i have a question... is it suppose to come already turned on? I opened it up at it was already at the vista set up without touvhing anything (the box was fully sealed). Plus if i look at the screen on an angle I can see what looks like dried soap on the screen, looks like someone took a wash cloth and tried to clean the screen? Is something not right here? I guess i will call tech support

Definitely isn't supposed to be on when you receive it. I wonder how that can even happen, the battery life is only around 3 hours... You SURE you didn't press the power button somehow?

hmm yeah you are right, but there is no way i touched the power button, even when i was taking the laptop out of the black case it felt really hot, i figured it was because it was in the delivery truck. Im really confused I do not see how i would have pressed the power button, what about the screen lookign like it was cleaned?

Almost sounds like the UPS guy took it out and played with it before he gave it to you.

It's probably not that mysterious. Some models will power themselves up when you open the lid. They have a sensor tied to the lid latch. The soap I can't explain.

? no, but if something seems a little strange when i get my laptop that i spent good money on, i think i have the right to be a little concerned if something doesnt seem right, no?

Is the only answer that would make sense. Did the box look tampered with before you opened it?

Check youtube for "M1530 unboxing" and see if everything was arranged exactly like the video.

You say it was only at the vista startup screen? If it was any further I'd consider a reformat as some form of key logging software or something may have been loaded on there, although i'll admit it's probably highly unlikely.

Sure is a strange story though!

It was probably on standby.... double check if anything is missing and if everything works. I don't think Dell would be ale to do anything if there's nothing wrong with it.

Whine? I highly doubt that if you received your new M1530 with **** all over the screen and it was on when you opened the box that you would just say "whatever". Get off of your high horse, you know you would ask questions.

First time I am hearing this. Strange. Hope you figure out what had happened or call up tech support and tell them this. Run a complete check on the PC to make sure everything is working fine. Else would be hard to convince Dell Tech Support I guess. Good luck mate.

ok well i restarted my computer, and after restarting, I got an error saying the computer was shut down wrong (which i def didnt shut it down wrong) and then the laptop went through the dell first time turning on the computer processes that all dells go through when turning on for the first time. (PS i didnt get this when i first opened up my already on laptop). So I called dell told them about the soap residue on the screen and the guy said it was normal? I then told him about how it was already on when I opened it and when i restarted I got an error message, he said something about vista being defective. I really cant belive anything they say.

So my options are return the computer to get it replaced? (how does this work? do I just ask for it to be replaced no questions asked and they send me a new one, then i send them this laptop, or..?

I also could live with a computer that when its on doesnt seem like anything is wrong with it maybe just something wrong with vista, which a good reformat can solve.

The thing is I dont really need this laptop until sep 1st so if i did have to wait for a new one it wouldnt really make a difference because I most likely wont even use it until I go away to college. So yeah I might just be worrying about nothing here, but then again why not just be sure that my laptop is working fine right when i get it.

Was the battery already inserted when it arrived? It shouldn't. There should be no error messages when first turned on since it wasn't even activated yet. If you have doubts, follow your instinct. Return it.

 My battery was installed when I unboxed my system. All I did was take it out of the box and power it on, and of course go through the usual set-up and end user stuff.

Mine also had the battery installed (9 cell) when I received it.

Hmm dell don't seem to be being very helpful about this. Perhaps you just got a bad tester who left it on standy and made a slight mess on the screen?

You should be able to return it since you just received it. Don't let Dell take a crap on you. Try again and hope for actual customer service.

But yeah, it seems like someone tampered with your stuff.

As for the record, my m1530 came with a 9-cell battery already attached and within the generic sleeve case. This didn't include any of the extra's except for the remote card.

so how will the exchange work? will I be able to keep this laptop until the new one arrives at my house? or do I have to send this to them and do they have to recieve it before they start to send me the new one?

Well no wonder they're having GPU overheating issues ... they are trying to run a computer while it is packed in a box ... lol. I dunno, sometimes you just have to keep calling until you actually get a knowledgeable and helpful person on the line. I would just exchange it and complain like mad in hope of freebies :D

Just ask Dell that question, they are really the only ones who know.
